A fuel specialist has called for more government support for sustainable liquid fuels after new research revealed that the majority of people who currently own petrol or diesel-engined cars plan on keeping an internal combustion engine car going as long as they can, and that 23.7 million ICE cars will still be on Britain’s roads in 2030. When almost 1300 British motorists who currently drive a petrol or diesel car were questioned on behalf of sustainable liquid fuels specialist SUSTAIN, six in 10, (59 per cent) planned to keep an internal combustion engine car going as long as possible. The average car on Britain’s roads is now almost a decade old, according to new analysis by the RAC Foundation. At the end of 2024, the typical car was nine years and 10 months old — the oldest ever recorded — compared with just seven years and five months in 2015. Petrol models are the oldest, averaging 10 years and four months, followed by diesels at 10 years and one month. By contrast, plug-in hybrids are only three years and four months old on average, while pure battery electric cars are just two years and six months old. It was obvious, really, that 1967 crime film Robbery would feature a group of crims haring around London in a Mk2. And just as obvious that the police behind them would have been in an S-type. Because these were the roles the cars were cast in period. It’s no secret that Great Train Robber Bruce Reynolds was a fan of the Mk2, and he wasn’t alone - more than once, a car he’d nicked for a job was nicked by another villain before it could be used.
