Even before it kicked off at Phillip Island in February, this year’s 25th season of the World Superbike Championship season was looking intriguing. The LAMS market is hot at the moment, and with Yamaha’s release of the YZF-R3, it’s about to get hotter. Filling the gap between the YZF-R15 and YZF-R6, the YZF-R3 carries the look and style of the bigger bikes, but in a learnerfriendly package. Power comes from a 321cc parallel twin, producing 30.9kW and 29.6Nm, and employing technology used on Yamaha’s larger capacity supersport bikes. Part of the R3’s brief was to create a ‘supersport machine you can ride every day’, so the engine combines good rideability in the low to mid-speed range, together with a strong and responsive character at higher rpm, and good fuel economy. Following huge customer demand, Greaser’s motorcycle workshop in Adelaide is looking to expand into a DIY motorcycle garage along the lines of Melbourne’s Kustom Kommune, Sydney’s Rising Sun Workshop and Brisbane’s Moto Arcade. The enterprising pair behind the venture have launched a membership drive and crowdfunding campaign to support it. Yamaha has released two new versions of their MT-07 middleweight naked, designed to appeal to newcomers and experienced riders. The existing MT-07LA, the LAMS 38.3kW (52.1ps) 655cc parallel twin, now features ABS braking as standard, with a new colour – Extreme Yellow – added to the Competition White, Matt Grey and Deep Armour colours available. The second addition is the ‘High Output’, which features a 55.0kW (74.8ps) 689cc version of the twin engine, and is only available in Race Blu. The HO model is not learner approved and is not available with ABS braking. Both versions feature a 6-speed transmission, lightweight frame, 805mm seat height, 17-inch wheels, full LED instrumentation and 14-litre fuel tank.
