Following the cancellation of this year’s series, the MX Nationals is officially history, with the Australian Motocross Championship to be rebranded as ‘ProMX’ for 2021 and beyond. The new series, announced by Motorcycling Australia (MA) on 13 October, follows the abandoning of this year’s MX Nationals season due to border closures, public gathering limits and other complications caused by COVID-19. Even before the 2020 MX Nationals was formally cancelled on 1 October, the championship was in trouble, following the early exit of longtime series promoter, Williams Event Management (WEM), in June. Daniel ‘Chucky’ Sanders has joined the Red Bull KTM Factory Team, with the goal of competing in next year’s Dakar Rally. Replacing Luciano Benavides in the Red Bull KTM Factory Team, Sanders will line up alongside fellow Aussie Toby Price, as well as Sam Sunderland and Matthias Walkner-all past Dakar winners and all with vast experience in cross-country rally raid riding. With the coronavirus pandemic forcing a new take on The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR), this year’s version of the annual fundraiser for men’s health charity Movember was unlike any other since the event began in 2012. With five straight championships since he joined the Kawasaki Racing Team in 2015, Jonathan Rea has already proven himself in World Superbike competition. As such, he would have been forgiven for letting this year’s FIM Motul Superbike World Championship slip, especially under the COVID-compromised circumstances of 2020.
