Seven years after it was launched, Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire has been launched again, but this time as a standalone all-electric brand and not just a model within the Milwaukee manufacturer’s lineup. The move to make LiveWire its own brand allows a new, dedicated focus on the electric space and also frees it from any heritage shackles as a Harley-Davidson model, allowing the brand to redefine the idea of electric motorcycles without the need to honour Harley-Davidson tradition. LiveWire won’t be entirely separated from Harley-Davidson, though. It will still be retailed through the Harley dealer network, but there will be dedicated EV showrooms in the future, as well as virtual showrooms, so customers can “discover the brand on their own terms”. Jonathan Rea continues to break records and set new milestones in the Motul FIM Superbike World Championship and the latest, achieved at this year’s opening round, was his 100th race win – the first rider in the category’s history to reach the milestone. Australia’s Jack Miller will continue with the Ducati Lenovo Team for another season, having extended his contract to the end of 2022. When Miller signed with the factory Ducati squad, it was a one-year deal, with the option to extend for a second. On the back of two successive wins in MotoGP, that option was activated. More than a year after they bought Norton Motorcycles, TVS Motor Company has announced two senior management appointments in the next phase of their revitalisation of the famous British motorcycle brand. On 13 May, Dr. Robert Hentschel was appointed as CEO, replacing Interim CEO John Russell, while Vittorio Urciuoli has been appointed to a newly-created Chief Technical Officer (CTO) position. Hentschel comes to Norton from Valmet Automotive Holding GmbH & Co KG and was previously Director of Lotus Engineering. Urcioli’s past roles include Director of URVI Ltd and Head of Powertrain at Lotus Cars. He was also previously a Project Leader at Ferrari and Aprilia Racing. Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) have released initial details of the Dakar Rally route for 2022, which goes through some familiar towns and cities in Saudi Arabia, but is claimed to be 80 per cent different from this year’s route. The 2021 Dakar started on the Red Sea coast at Jeddah, then ventured inland, taking in Riyadh, Ha’il and Sakaka before running back down the Red Sea coast to finish at Jeddah, avoiding the Eastern Provinces and that area’s ‘Empty Quarter’ entirely. For its third running in Saudi Arabia, the 2022 Dakar route will spend almost the entire first week in the Eastern Province.
