The return of Marc Marquez to MotoGP in 2021 hit a peak at the Sachsenring round on 20 June, when he recorded his first race win in 581 days. While the circuit layout at the Sachsenring helped (putting less stress on his injured right arm), Marquez said it was at the German GP weekend that he felt for the first time like there were fewer limits on his ability to ride fast. In the post-race press conference, Marquez revealed he had shut out a lot of ‘outside noise’ since returning to racing in April, but had welcomed feedback from those he thought could help him. Royal Enfield’s prevalence and position in today’s motorcycle market gives the impression that they’ve always been here. In a way, that’s true, as the brand celebrates its 120th Anniversary this year. Around half of that 120-year history has come out of England, with the second half coming from India, where Royal Enfield not only survives, but thrives today. The first part of the Royal Enfield story was much like that of many other British motorcycle brands, starting with bicycles before progressing to powered transport. It may the “little brother” in the Bonneville family, but the T100 has grown a bit for 2021 – at least in terms of performance. The 900cc parallel twin has had a power hike of 7.35kW for a new maximum of 47.8kW at 7400rpm, which is 1500rpm higher than previously. There’s a 500rpm higher redline, too. Maximum torque is unchanged at 80Nm, but the new peak of 3750rpm is 550rpm higher than before. This while also meeting Euro 5 emissions standards. As well as being more powerful, the engine also weighs less, thanks to the adoption of a lighter crankshaft and balancer shafts, a thin-walled clutch cover and magnesium cam cover. These modifications are the key contributors to an overall weight reduction of 4kg compared to the 2020 Bonneville T100.…

For a Bonneville that’s made to cruise, the Speedmaster offers all-day capability and sophisticated style. For 2021, the 1200cc parallel twin gains Euro 5 compliance, which, according to Triumph, not only reduces emissions, but delivers a more immediate and responsive feel. Maximum outputs are 57.5kW at 6100rpm and 106Nm at 4000rpm - slightly less power and slightly more torque compared to the Bonneville T120 – but over 90 per cent of torque is available all the way up to 5750rpm. Switching from an air-cooled to liquid-cooled engine, there’s also a new frame, new styling, new instrumentation and an abundance – for a Sportster – of rider-assistance technologies. The ‘Covid Boom’ in new motorcycle sales that kicked off in 2020 and saw a year-on-year sales increase of 22.1 per cent over 2019’s numbers has continued into 2021, with more than 55,000 new bikes and OHVs sold in the first six months of the year – an increase of more than 5 per cent on the same period in 2020. From January to the end of June 2021, a total of 55,840 new motorcycles, scooters and off highway vehicles were sold - an increase of 3,001 on the corresponding period last year. The 2021 Red Bull Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix has been cancelled, due to ongoing complications under COVID-19. Ending weeks of speculation, the cancellation was made official in an announcement released on 6 July by the FIM, IRTA, Dorna Sports and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC). The release stated that travel complications and logistical restrictions were behind the Australian round’s cancellation for the second successive year. While unsaid, the likely requirement for all riders, teams and other personnel coming into Victoria from overseas to submit to a 14-day quarantine period was the major stumbling block to the Australian round going ahead. In Triumph-speak, the Bonneville range are ‘Modern Classics’. For 2021, there’s a bit more “modern” in the mix, as the entire lineup has been subject to change, starting with updated versions of both the 900cc and 1200cc twin cylinder engines to meet Euro 5 emissions requirements. First appearing in 2016 as an entry point into Triumph’s Bonneville family, the Street Twin retains that position for 2021, starting at under $16,000. Running the same 900cc parallel twin as the Bonneville T100, but offering more of a modern look with its cast alloy wheels, modified fuel tank and modern tank decal, the Street Twin also features a significantly lower seat height of 765mm. For 2021, the Bonneville Bobber blends the two 2020 models - Bobber and Bobber Black – into one specification, offering what Triumph says is authenticity and a higher specification. A survivor from the dawn of the post-war Grand Prix racing era was the top-selling motorcycle at Bonhams Summer Sale in the UK this July. Held in conjunction with the International Classic MotorCycle Show in Staffordshire, the three-day Bonhams auction comprised more than 650 lots, covering not only motorcycles, but sidecar outfits, projects, parts, collectables and memorabilia. The fact that this was the first in-person motorcycle auction Bonhams have conducted for almost two years may have explained the 98 per cent clearance rate and almost £3.6 million (AU$6.7M approx.) in total sales.
