• Toughest - Texas Water Safari, USA From the interior of Texas to the Gulf Coast, the Texas Water Safari is aptly named with a 262-mile course traversing lakes, swamps and the open ocean. Battling with the southern heat, racers have to contend with mosquitos, fire ants, alligators, sharks and water moccasins. There is no prize money for the winner - only the title of ‘The World’s Toughest Canoe Race.’ The first official race was held in 1963, and is run annually on the second Saturday of June. Boat requirements are loose: from solo, tandem, up to six-person crews, as long as its powered by human muscle. The race must be completed in 100 hours (the record is 30 hours by a six-man team).
