A Franklin, North Carolina native, Malcolm’s backyard in the Southeast is a kayaking hot spot where many of the greats have hailed from. Before I became pregnant I heard a lot of comments about how kayaking as a lifestyle is impossible to maintain once you have a child. I am happy to say that this is not necessarily true! What I think is true though is that for a new family to be happy, the parents also need to be exactly that. For us, this meant that we still needed to travel and kayak. I think everyone is familiar with being sore after paddling when you are using muscles you may not have used in a while, or you had a particularly hard session on the water. This soreness is not always the same, and it can be difficult to decipher if what you feel is part of the normal process of getting back in shape or if you have actually hurt yourself. Both regular muscle soreness and pulled or strained muscles are created by the same mechanism: the contraction of the muscle fibers being used, or an over-stretching of muscle fibers.
