The Vjosa is one of Europe’s last wild rivers, flowing freely from the Pindus Mountains in northwestern Greece through southern Albania. After years of resistance to dam projects, it recently won an unbelievable battle. In June 2022, the Albanian government signed a memorandum of understanding with Patagonia to designate the Vjosa as a Wild River National Park, and less than a year later, in March 2023, that promise became law. This landmark decision not only protects a stunning and vital riverscape, but also supports sustainable ecotourism in the region.
