I’ve been an avid spectator of channel Nine’s The Block for many years now, and I have to say, the show never disappoints. Though engaging 10 amateur renovators to rip up and redo five worn-out apartments or houses seems disastrous in theory, the contestants always seem to exceed expectations and create stunning spaces, and this year has certainly been no exception. The kitchen, bathroom, butler’s pantry and laundry spaces have been particularly impressive this season. As it is an open-plan layout, a seamless flow into the living area and cabinetry that matched was essential to the design. Despite the dramatic contrast of the cabinetry and island, there is a sense of tranquillity and openness in the space. An informal dining spot also had to be incorporated into the design, along with a computer nook and organisational space for appointments and invitations. We wanted the space to reflect the family’s quirky tastes and be unique in its design. Drawing on this idea, we utilised curves and pops of orange to create a vivacious feel to the room. The homeowners wanted a whole house turnaround, with a gorgeous, functional kitchen full of drawers and a location for every item. They also have an eye for antique furniture and modern artwork, so the kitchen had to suit this eclectic mix of styles and display the antique canisters which have accompanied the homeowners with each move. “The homeowners presented us with a very specific brief for this kitchen — they wanted to revive the space with minimal changes to its original structure, and they requested the integration of finger-pull and soft-close technology throughout. The pink tile splashback was chosen early on in the design process when we noticed a foot stool with a similar pink that would work perfectly as a tiled herringbone splashback. “The original kitchen was part of a ‘70s extension to the home, and was in dire need of a makeover. The homeowners had their heart set on a classic kitchen, and also requested glossy door fronts. Much attention to detail was given to the kitchen’s intricate features during the design and renovation stages of this project, particularly with relation to the Federation mouldings, plinth bases, corbels and fish-eye fretwork. The only challenge was that of size in the space allocated for the bathroom. To tackle the long, narrow space, I chose to have a freestanding bathtub installed and mounted on a wooden plinth. This style of bath was designed specifically for small spaces and, elevated on the contrasting plinth, gives the impression of being much larger, in effect widening the room.
