Tara Read of Kitchens by CCJS has been a kitchen designer for almost 11 years, but prior to entering the world of design, she was a real estate sales representative on the Gold Coast and in Cairns. Her previous career taught her that kitchens were often the most important space in the house for potential buyers (aside from big man sheds for some blokes!). “Previously an old, dark and cramped kitchen, this space was in dire need of a makeover when we began the design process. The homeowners wanted a workable, functional space for their young family, so we opened up the area during the renovation to eradicate its previous cramped feel. White was chosen for the benchtops and cabinetry to increase the kitchen’s brightness, and plenty of drawers and other storage solutions were added to the design to increase functionality. We love the extended waterfall edge of the long island. “The homeowner’s brief called for a modern family home with an entertainer’s dream kitchen able to cater for a crowd of up to 100 people. The family of five was ready for a change from the poor layout of the previous space, where the working areas were located near west-facing windows, making it hot and uncomfortable in the afternoon. We added a luxurious edge to the space, with the long island featuring a gorgeous benchtop that contrasts dramatically with the dark metallic doors and timber. It has real presence in the central part of the home, and leads out to an alfresco dining area on one side and a pool/conservatory on the other. The home in which this kitchen resides is truly spectacular in its presentation and resonance with the Edwardian era, circa 1910. The original kitchen, being a hub space, required extra storage and some modern elements to facilitate this aspect, so the homeowners decided to renovate. We love the verticallyorientated subway tiles. “The red clinker brick house has a history that dates back to the 1940s and a kitchen that was nearly as old. After renovating the space themselves and keeping the updated kitchen longer than intended, the homeowners wanted to do a bigger renovation and make the kitchen the centrepiece of their living area. Walls were removed and spaces were opened up to create a flow from the lounge area to the kitchen and dining spaces. The plan for an entertainer’s kitchen developed from initial ideas of a white, modern space to a black one with an island on the other side of the room. “The original kitchen was part of a ‘70s extension to the home, and was in dire need of a makeover. The homeowners had their heart set on a classic kitchen, and also requested glossy door fronts. Much attention to detail was given to the kitchen’s intricate features during the design and renovation stages of this project, particularly with relation to the Federation mouldings, plinth bases, corbels and fish-eye fretwork. Classic-look cabinetry drawer fronts were chosen to complement these features, and modernity was injected into the space through brand-new state-of-the-art appliances. “This kitchen was part of a new build, so we had quite a bit of freedom with the space. We used this to our advantage and endeavoured to create the best possible design within the parameters of the allocated space. The homeowners had their heart set on a modern kitchen with a monochrome palette, so we made sure to deliver this. They also requested an island bench with seating for four people. Before we lifted a hammer we came up with a bathroom design that makes an impact and is welcoming without being overbearing. “This stunning kitchen was completed as part of a knockdownrebuild project by architectural practice Chrofi. For the redesign of the home’s 50-year-old kitchen, the homeowners requested an open-plan, minimalist space that would be functional and suitable for entertaining. They wanted an extra-long showpiece island benchtop that could house two dishwashers, a bar fridge and storage drawers, without any join lines on the benchtop.
