You don’t want to settle for ordinary, especially when it comes to the heart of your home. That’s why we love this kitchen, a study in extraordinary design and custom finishing touches. The highlight of the space has to be that gorgeous cantilever stone island bench. With no visible support at the end, it seems to almost float, adding a sense of elegance that contrasts with the concrete look. This bench is finished on the other side with a waterfall end. Two wine fridges have been inset into the space, making it practical as well as visually appealing. That theme of good-looking functionality continues throughout the rest of the room. This home’s previous kitchen was actually second-hand — the owner-builders purchased the vinyl kitchen and adapted it to fit the available space. It served its purpose for many years but was in dire need of an update, which is why the homeowners chose to renovate. Sitting behind the back deck of this suburban home, this charming traditional-style kitchen shines with little details and quality furnishings. Designed for many cooks, the kitchen offers abundant island bench space so all family members can work cohesively. The working space is zoned organically by the layout, from cleaning and preparation through to cooking and serving, all designed to give users the space they need. The family of five was ready for a change from the poor layout of the previous space, where the working areas were located near west-facing windows, making it hot and uncomfortable in the afternoon. The original kitchen was part of a ‘70s extension to the home, and was in dire need of a makeover. The homeowners had their heart set on a classic kitchen, and also requested glossy door fronts. Much attention to detail was given to the kitchen’s intricate features during the design and renovation stages of this project, particularly with relation to the Federation mouldings, plinth bases, corbels and fish-eye fretwork. This stunning kitchen was completed as part of a knockdown-rebuild project by architectural practice Chrofi. For the redesign of the home’s 50-year-old kitchen, the homeowners requested an open-plan, minimalist space that would be functional and suitable for entertaining. They wanted an extra-long showpiece island benchtop that could house two dishwashers, a bar fridge and storage drawers, without any join lines on the benchtop. This was a challenge as the chosen stone slabs came in a maximum size of 3 metres. The solution was a cantilevered top, to offset the wider base on the island. When I began the design process, the homeowners expressed the desire for a clean minimal look with a pop of colour. I introduced a bright yellow for the pantry doors, cabinet door above the fridge and around the rangehood to create impact. The timber framework of the cabinetry is visible and made from solid Tasmanian oak timber to bring in the warmth of a natural material.
