The kitchen is a social place, perfect for family interaction, and with the increasing popularity of open-plan living, it’s no surprise that integrating multiple “zones” into the kitchen design has become commonplace. Australia’s finest kitchen designers met for lunch at Adelaide’s fabulous Sprout Cooking School recently, as part of their annual KBDi Design Symposium. MasterChef fans enjoyed seeing All Stars winner Callum Hann in action in the kitchen, alongside his partner in cooking, accredited practising dietitian Themis Chryssidis. The pair put on a fantastic show while cooking up a storm, and shared their top loves and loathes about the kitchens they visit with their travelling cooking school. They encouraged the kitchen designers in the room to ensure the kitchens they create are practical, workable spaces that don’t make cooking any more difficult than it needs to be. DESIGN-MADE Team KBQ recently visited DESIGN-MADE, Sydney’s first independently run design festival. The three-day event was presented by AUTHENTIC DESIGN ALLIANCE in partnership with FACTORY DESIGN DISTRICT and was founded and curated by Anne-Maree Sargeant and Kobe Johns. The event included five curated installations and more than 70 showcases of local design, as well as live demonstrations with Porcelume, spoon carving, leather working and screenprinting. KBDI AUSTRALIAN CERTIFIED DESIGNER OF THE YEAR 2017 Darren James CKD Au Outstanding design aptitude, flawless documentation, technical accuracy and impeccable attention to detail made KBDi-accredited designer Darren James CKD Au the clear winner of this national award. Two design entries (pictured below) are required for this category, and both must meet the comprehensive criteria expected of a KBDi-accredited designer. In Darren’s first entry, a challenging brief required a spacious kitchen for a family of seven. The homeowners needed a kitchen that would accommodate multiple cooks, and wanted plenty of space to relax and entertain. From an aesthetic point of view, they longed to bring some urban cool to their acreage home. To prevent moisture build-up, bathrooms need a fan with the capacity to change the air volume of the room at least 15 to 20 times per hour. To ensure the fan is working correctly, there needs to be air flow coming into the bathroom via an open window or from under a door. (FIG.1). Energy ratings under the Australian Building Code may require doorways to the bathroom to be sealed and this, combined with a sealed window, may reduce the effectiveness of any installed exhaust fan, regardless of the brand. Check that your ducting is pulled taut in the cavity. If there are any kinks or bends in the ducting, the in-line exhaust fan will not operate effectively.
