A grand design with character in spades and cupboard space for days! The discerning owner of this Federation home was looking for a grand kitchen with custom detailing. Unlike in the rest of the home, which features dark-timber architraves and floors, the client requested lighter-hued joinery in the kitchen, which is in the new south-facing extension. In contrast, the island enjoys a dark-blue silhouette and features lacquered brass inlay and two brass sinks and taps to service the two dishwashers and create two individual work zones. A walnut raised bar sits atop the island as it takes cues from the timber dining table. Fresh coastal vibes mix with subtle masculine styling inside this bespoke kitchen that focuses on ergonomic design and functionality. Along with a slew of practical enhancements, the placement of colours and finishing materials in this kitchen renovation has made it visually cohesive and highly appealing. The crisp Lexicon satin two-pack cabinetry offers the space that “bright white feeling” as it blends with vertical Tasmanian oak battens finished in Danish oil and dark stainless-steel appliances. With a background in hospitality in a former life, and being huge entertainers, the owners of this outside kitchen needed it to be intimate enough for a small group of 10, but also to be able to host a large party of 100 if needed. The incorporation of Vintec wine and beer fridges, Smeg integrated dishwashers, commercial Teppanyaki grills, and an Italian pizza oven that makes the most perfect pizzas in under 6 minutes, made this outside kitchen the ultimate hosting area. This modern, functional space is a far cry from the home’s original ‘80s kitchen. Custom built in the Inset Kitchens factory to reflect the homeowners’ requests, the kitchen was designed to bring a touch of modernity to this section of the home. The kitchen was custom built with additional height to suit the home’s high ceiling. The existing built-in plaster bulkheads and built-in pantry were removed during the renovation, and plaster cornices were custom-made to match existing cornices featured throughout the home. The homeowners wanted a revived kitchen that would unexpectedly impact and surprise visitors, so this black-and-timber masterpiece was created. The pink-tile splashback was chosen early on in the design process when we noticed a foot stool with a similar pink that would work perfectly as a tiled herringbone splashback. These well-travelled homeowners didn’t want a standard white kitchen — quite the opposite. The mandate was for “something different” and designer Robyn Coté from Inspired Interiors was more than happy to think outside the box. The homeowners wanted their new kitchen to be functional for their family while still maintaining the classic-contemporary style of their home. They were frustrated by inefficient lighting and low cabinets and wanted to increase the worktop space. Keeping the existing tiled flooring, curved ceiling bulkhead, downlights and the walls intact were non-negotiable design constraints Robyn worked with. The first order of business for the owners was to ensure that earthy, bold colours were incorporated into the palette. The design team have incorporated a honed marble splashback in an elongated hexagon-shaped tile bursting with subtle tones of teal. The late 1990s and early 2000s weren’t a great time for interior design as the owners of this renovated bathroom can attest. Saddled with a corner spa bath and a dated aesthetic, the client approached Earthborne By Design with a brief to update the bathroom and transform it into a more contemporary space, with a moody spa-like ambience, black details and a view to the garden courtyard. The brief stipulated the removal of the corner spa bath, the installation of a new window to frame the courtyard, a double shower with bench seat, a rain-sensor skylight, underfloor heating, a custom-made vanity and an in-wall toilet suite.
