Working with a new build means a refreshingly clean slate, which is exactly what the designers got in this freshly built home. Texture and a variety of materials were used to deliver this modern and highly versatile space, creating a hub for cooking and entertaining. Storage was a key focus in this busy space. Rather than having everything kept hidden away, a combination of open shelving and glass cupboards was used to allow the homeowners to display their favourite pieces and collection of cookbooks. This beautiful kitchen by Schmidt Kitchens and Interior Solutions is a perfect example of why Scandinavian design is a timeless trend. It’s a minimalist clean design that oozes stunning luxury. Originally built in the ’90s, the previous kitchen had outdated appliances and a dilapidated look. The clients wanted to completely remove the kitchen and replace it with contemporary clean lines that exude a modern feel. Given a kitchen’s central role in regular family get-togethers, the owners of this space were determined not to compromise when they downsized to an apartment from a large, luxury house. Together with designer Carla Waghorn and builder Exclusive Cabinetry, they set about knocking down existing walls, building new ones and reconfiguring openings to optimise the more compact floor plan. Sharing this narrow room meant there were size limits to what could be done, but that didn’t dampen the potential to make this an inviting space. Ceilings were altered and walls removed and reconfigured to allow for a butler’s pantry, completely transforming this formerly tired, dated zone. This fresh new build in Cornubia, south-east Queensland, presented various challenges at the initial planning stage. Designer Lee Hardcastle of Enigma Interiors was ready to tackle the task of making best use of the space available. You’d never guess it to look at this stunning kitchen, but it began with a very different vision. The owners’ initial intention was to create an open-plan space but, after weighing the pros and cons of removing load-bearing walls, they opted, in consultation with designers John and Helle Olsen of Collaroy Kitchen Centre, to work with the home’s existing layout. Having learned lessons from the impracticalities of a previous kitchen renovation, the owners of this charming modern country kitchen were clear on their requirements from the outset. A durable, easy-clean benchtop and lots of deep drawers featured on their list of essentials, and designer Ashley Maddison, of AM Interior Studio, gladly took their wishes into account, measuring key appliances to ensure drawers catered to their depth. At her suggestion, Taj Mahal quartzite was also applied to the countertops and splashback to achieve the natural marble-look the clients preferred, without the fussy maintenance. Given her background in film and television set design, this client’s request for a fun, high-impact space to wow guests was to be expected. However, the room’s location, literally dug from the ground beneath the existing home, presented a challenge. With no natural light to work with, designer Aaron Dew of Yeomans Bagno & Ceramiche chose to embrace the moodiness of the space and incorporate task and ambient lighting, including a circular Ablaze backlit mirror, to create immediate dramatic impact.
