In a story fit for nightmares, a Chinese man complaining of hearing pounding sounds was shocked to discover the cause was due to a spider spinning webs inside his ear canal. The unnamed patient checked into the Dalian Central Hospital, in China’s Liaoning province after feeling an uncomfortable sensation in his ear and explained, “I didn’t pay too much attention to it... When I woke up this morning, the sensation was still there, but now there was also a drumming like sound.” Doctor Cui Shulin, deputy chief physician at the department of otolaryngology, inspected the man’s ear to find a fog-like white barrier around five centimetres into the ear canal, as well as, a moving creature. Doctors used a special syringe to flood the ear and flush out the spider.…

A new baseball has solved the problem of not being able to play a game of catch at night. The SparkCatch LED-illuminated baseball, otherwise known as the Meteor Baseball, was invented by two baseball enthusiasts. A blueberry farm in Oregon, America, has created an innovative way to deter birds from eating their fruit. After losing 25 per cent of their crops to the feathered fruit-loving fiends, the farm installed six Agrilaser Autonomics mounted on pedestals which fire a green laser beam across the bushes. Reports claim the lasers are harmless with the birds mistaking the lights for incoming predators and taking flight if it gets close. Bird Control Group claim the technology has reduced the number of birds on the farm by 99 per cent and saving 262,500 kilograms of blueberries, believed to represent $99,733. The laser took around four years to develop with Bird Control Group testing various colours, wavelengths and beam widths. But, success comes at a price with each laser costing around…

A new pair of sneakers has been released aimed to increase calorie burning whilst walking. Regular sneakers usually weigh between 200 and 400 grams, but, Muscle Trainers add an extra 1200 grams for women and an extra 1400 grams for men. In each of the special shoes, hundreds of small iron balls are hidden within the internationally-patented soles. Despite the extra weight, Muscle Trainers are comfortable to wear, made from high-quality materials and feature a high-cut design to protect the ankles. Scientists at Tokyo Gakugei University and Osaka Wako University tested the fat burning footwear and confirmed the wearer’s calorie burning process is increased by 25 per cent. A rare tree native to the rainforests of New Caledonia has the unusual ability to collect large quantities of nickel from the ground. The ‘pycnandra acuminata’ tree is known as a hyperaccumulator and has evolved to extract normally toxic levels of heavy metals from the soil and store it in stems, leaves and seeds. With a blue-green-coloured sap, the tree reportedly contains up to 25 per cent nickel. Scientists believe the unusually elevated concentration of nickel protects the tree from leaf-chewing insects and other herbivores. Hyperaccumulator trees were originally discovered in the 1970s and currently over 65 such plants have been identified in New Caledonia with others located in Turkey, Brazil, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.…

A group of sandwich stores in Maine, have collaborated to make a 48-metre-long “Maine Italian sub” in a trial attempt for an official Guinness World Record. Around 10 shops were responsible for creating around four metres of sandwich each which consisted of meats, cheese and vegetables. Organisers are believed to have consulted with Guinness World Records who advised they currently do not have a category for the longest Maine Italian sub. The official attempt for the record-breaking sandwich is planned to happen sometime next year. The trial run was hosted in celebration of the Harvest on the Harbor culinary festival with most of the super sandwich being devoured by spectators.…

A new form of fishing taking off around the Brisbane River combines treasure hunting and environmentalism. Magnet fishing involves using a rope with a powerful magnet attached to pull various objects to the surface of the river. Keen fisherman, Adam Gee, explained, “The thrill of the find is really the big part of it. I’m always asking, ‘What will I find next?’” Gee uses a 20-metre nylon rope with a 115-kilogram-pull-force magnet. Some of the recent discoveries include lost car keys, car tyres, bikes, trolleys and fishing tackle. A German athlete has reportedly been banned from an all-you-can-eat restaurant in Bavaria for eating too much. Jaroslav Bobrowski, a tri-athlete competitor and software engineer by trade, recently visited the Running Sushi restaurant in Landshut. After paying around $25 for the all-you-can-eat meal deal, Bobrowski impressively consumed almost 100 plates of the Japanese delicacies. However, on his way out to pay the bill, Bobrowski was informed that he was forbidden from returning. The owner of Running Sushi explained to a local newspaper that Bobrowski received the ban because “He eats for five people... That is not normal”.
