HELLO Spring! Oh, Mother Nature how you have challenged our greenskeepers these past few years, what with water-logged courses and a huge increase in foot traffic as golf boomed through COVID! In August I attended the NZ golf council conference and learned so much about golf in NZ. I also found a greater sense of appreciation for the quantity of training and education that superintendents and greenskeepers undergo in both Aus and NZ. Not only are the golf clubs trying to modernise and become inclusive environments, they are also staying relevant and up to date with sustainable management options and natural choices to maintain the courses. I was told that one club in Victoria (not NZ) even keeps sheep to help maintain the greens – that’s one way to minimise…

IF there is such a thing as having a natural ability to design golf courses, Kristine Kerr has it. The Auckland, New Zealand native has travelled the world pursuing her passion, designing courses in nine different counties. Kerr’s instincts were honed at a young age. Her stepfather was a scratch golfer and had a home putting green. She also walked the countryside with her grandparents and not only remembered what she saw but also put her recollections and ideas on paper. “I can draw,” Kerr said. “I have the ability to draw what I see, and the countryside is so gorgeous. I think (when) you see where the sun is, the shape of the land, and where you’re going to start off, you adjust and develop a feel of all…
