Ask a grownup to make a short slit through the drinking straw near the top, using the blade of the scissors or a knife. Set the straw aside for later. 2. Kites are heavier than air, but wind makes them soar. When you fly a kite, the wind pushes it up and away, and the kite string pulls it back toward you. The kite dances at the end of the string! People have been flying kites for thousands of years. In the past, kites were sometimes used to send messages or to learn about the wind. Now kites are mostly flown for fun.
