WHAT IS AN F-STOP? What is an f-stop? The mathematical bit Let’s get some of the mathematical theory out of the way. In photography an f-stop is a unit to quantify ratios of exposure. Each added stop of exposure means a doubling or increase by a factor of two. A subtracted stop is a factor of one half. So in simple terms an f-stop, or one EV (exposure value), is halving or doubling your exposure. As an example of how an f-number is calculated, we need to look at the equation N=f/D.
