If you’ve ever sat in the Zen-like surroundings of a Nobu restaurant or sipped a martini in the Gold Bar at The New York Edition hotel, you’ll be familiar with architect David Rockwell’s sophisticated style roughed up with a raw, industrial edge. When he’s not designing hotels (such as W Hotels worldwide) or restaurants and bars (Vandal and Chefs Club in New York are his latest), he’s turning his hand to children’s playgrounds and hospitals, temporary structures like the Ground Zero memorial walk and a marketplace for the new Battersea Power Station. Technically speaking, the term spiral staircase is a misnomer, with so-called ‘spiral’ stairs actually being helical in shape, due to the widening/tightening format of spirals as they curve (though this name doesn’t have quite the same ring!). Although nowadays these staircases are chosen for their aesthetic appeal, spirals had a more practical function when they were first conceived during the Middle Ages. The narrow corkscrew design made it impossible for attackers to swarm up castle steps, with the clockwise turn a particular disadvantage to right-handers, who were forced to fight with their left. Today, these designs are relished for their slim, compact format and are particularly popular in smaller properties with a limited footprint. This is it! This is the month that indooroutdoor living finally kicks in and we get to throw open doors and windows and seemingly double our space – instantly. It’s a design approach shared in all the houses we’ve featured in this issue, from the Novogratz family’s expansive, tiered patio (page 34) to Émilie’s glazed kitchen extension (page 94) and the amazing boundary-blurring bathroom in Kim and Graham’s Cape Town abode (page 74). 1 AWASH WITH STYLE Shower rooms are usually more private spaces than the family bathroom and are often en suite, which means you can really go to town when it comes to style. With fewer fiddly features and mostly flat planes to play with, tiles are the obvious choice for adding a luxe look. There’s a vast choice available in every colourway and, as this tends to be a relatively bijou space, you can justify blowing the budget with something a bit more expensive. Background Not many items of furniture have ended up on a nation’s postage stamp, but the Landi chair received that honour back in 2004, when Switzerland included it as part of the country’s most significant design achievements (along with the pocket watch, Swiss Army knife and, er, the funicular railway). Summer pineapple and passion fruit pavlova Serves 6 to 8 Preheat the oven to 150°C/gas mark 2. To make the meringue, place the egg whites in an electric mixer and whisk on a high speed until stiff peaks form. Gradually add the caster sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, waiting 30 seconds before adding another tablespoon. Once all the sugar is added, whisk for a further 6 minutes, or until the mixture is stiff and glossy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, add the vinegar and whisk for a further 2 minutes, or until glossy and combined. When the mixture is thick and glossy, the sugar should be completely dissolved.
