CHANGING FACES Take a look at Habitat’s latest collection and you might find it staring right back at you – deconstructed faces abound, with oversized eyes peering up from the floor. Kate Butler, head of product design and successor to recently retired creative director Polly Dickens, lifts the lid. ‘The abstract faces are modern reinterpretations of figurative art popular in the Fifties,’ she says. ‘We’ve reassembled components in humorous ways, with “head-shaped” ceramic vases, the human eye used as a central motif and irregular-shaped textiles that mirror the form of the human face.’ Expect a shift towards more eclectic materials elsewhere, with rugs made from upcycled fabric from the Indian fashion industry alongside spun bamboo lighting and glazed ceramics. KITCHEN ‘I went for a relaxed design in here, with freestanding furniture to give that more casual feel. Dust off that old Panama hat pronto! The spring/summer 2018 catwalk was awash with leaf-printed fabrics and exotic motifs proved colonial style is big news this season. On the Dries Van Noten runway, palm prints sprawled into pretty paisley and wild fauna to embody the world traveller look, while models in all-white loosely tailored trouser suits seemed just short of a rattan cane at Jil Sander’s show.
