Welcome to AW20. In usual circumstances, the interiors season kicks off with the London Design Festival, by which time, as journalists, we’ve spent the summer at buzzy press launches and grand fabric unveilings. Not this year. This season has arrived in a quieter and more reserved fashion. As a result, we’ve had a little more time than usual to reflect on what we’re seeing. In these pages we endeavour to showcase what beauty (in design) looks like in October 2020. To do this, we’ve focused on the people, places, products and ideas that are influencing us right now. milan-based designers Alejandro Restrepo Perez and Davide Colzi can be counted on to put on a good show. They helped Chanel create its legendary La Passeggiata and Little Black Jacket events and their client list also includes Louboutin, Jimmy Choo and Etro. Their job is to turn a blank space into something spectacular, be it a fashion show, a window display or an event. But, for the couple, their role goes deeper than impressing the front row fashion editors. ‘Yes, we are architects, but we don’t only construct spaces,’ says Davide. ‘It’s more about creating a personality and a sense of soul.’ The same goes for the couple’s 1970s apartment in central Milan. The first step to working with cream and off-white is understanding the difference between the two. Patrick O’ Donnell, brand ambassador at Farrow & Ball, explains: ‘Creams will read warm as they have an underlying yellow in them, and some have a dash of red, too. The combination of floor, worktop and doors represent the biggest surface areas and will set the tone for the overall scheme. Start with the surfaces and match other key pieces, such as the cabinets, to them. Combine materials and colours. If you’re after a contrasting look, choose a white marble and let the veining guide you in finding the right paint tone for the cabinetry. When it comes to industrial surfaces, such as concrete and terrazzo, wood, fluted glass, brushed steel and metallics such as gold and bronze will complement these worktops. One minute with Jeff Muhs Describe your style. I think of my paintings like a reflection in a puddle. Each piece is a landscape, with nature’s beauty distilled and rearranged into its most basic form: light, colour and space. Some people say they look like stone or marble. Materials? Last year we launched a competition we hoped would open up the design industry to some of those who might not otherwise find an easy way in. From how much wealth you need to do unpaid internships to the connections you might require to open doors, it has led to a relatively homogenous workforce. When choosing a material for your work surface, the best way to start is with a reality check. Think about how you use your kitchen and what you most enjoy about it. Then explore which materials will enable you to keep on doing that, and how they’ll respond to heat, water and other common kitchen occurrences. Tamsin Johnson INTERIOR DESIGNER Fashion turned interior designer Tamsin Johnson established her own practice in Sydney in 2013, after years of working in London. Her light-filled, graceful spaces, including her own multipurpose art gallery, showroom, antiques store and office in Paddington, celebrate ‘a spirit of tactful disharmony’, she says. 2020 hasn’t been all I thought it would be. No glittering gold excursions to St Petersburg, no wild ruby weddings in Vegas and no rummaging through flea markets in and around Biarritz. But although my feet have been planted on English soil, I have still found refreshing, exciting journeys to be had, captivated by a discovery found by looking out of my window. Since its inception in 1973, Agape has been at the forefront of modern Italian bathroom design. Known for its sleek and minimalist aesthetic, the company’s products have been designed by some of the most influential names in the biz, like Patricia Urquiola, Konstantin Grcic and Enzo Mari. But what happens when such continental design meets a new but traditionally built home made from rustic materials in the ancient barn-style vernacular of bucolic Oxfordshire? The main challenge, as Mike Lennon, design manager of Kitchen Architecture discovered, was how to integrate such contemporary fittings without losing the warmth that gave the building its soul.
