It’s been over six months since we first started planning this issue, the Livingetc team getting together to pool ideas and share instinctive feelings about where decor was going. Since then, we’ve been watching closely as themes emerge in new work from designers and monitoring what sort of products and colours they’re drawn to. And while we’ve broken these themes down into nine key trends destined to be big this year, I can sum them up in one word: conviviality. The 70s are back, again – but this time it’s less ‘Groovy Baby!’ and more Abigail’s Party, all fine frocks and finer china and glassware. ‘There’s a real desire to play up our hosting, to be extravagant with foods and the performance around them,’ says designer Sophie Lou Jacobsen. This approach has seen the return of ultra-specific items of tableware: the oyster plates, the butter dishes, the digestif glasses. The mood may be retro but the look is very now.…

a new way of decorating has been emerging, one that feels so right it seems to have folded itself into modern design lore. It’s the idea of taking one amazing piece – just one, that has something sculptural or shaped or standout about it – and 6 placing it in an otherwise more liveable scheme. A little like the ‘unexpected red theory’, which suggests adding a flash of a jarring colour will lift a room, now we have the ‘unexpected anything theory’, that broadens the approach. ‘So many people ask me for that quick fix to improve their home’s design,’ says Angus Buchanan of Buchanan Studio. ‘And this approach is about the closest thing you can get – adding one hero piece that makes you look at the room differently.’…

COMPOSED AND COORDINATED ‘Styling antiques within a contemporary space is about balancing contrasts and letting each piece sing in harmony with its surroundings,’ says Scott Maddux, one half of interior design studio Maddux Creative. ‘In this recent project, we paired an antique Hungarian sideboard with a bold Roy Lichtenstein lithograph, which allowed us to create a dialogue between eras. The key is layering the elements thoughtfully to celebrate both history and modernity without either feeling overpowering.’ With sculptural lamps and ornaments adding texture and scale, the pairing perfectly anchors the room while showcasing individual personality. relocating from a rustic house, built from logs on 15 acres opposite a forest in Canada, to a Victorian townhouse with a postage stamp-size garden in southwest London is a bit of a lifestyle change, to put it mildly. ‘Yes, it was quite a culture shock,’ laughs Krista Hargrave, who made the move with her family when husband Eric’s private equity job brought them to the capital. ‘The children were only six, five and three and they had never even walked on a busy street,’ she adds. ‘We chose a leafy, gentrified area and gradually adjusted, escaping to the countryside when we could.’ Once the family knew the move was permanent, they bought this spacious family home, previously renovated 15 years ago and set over four floors. ‘In terms of…

1 SHOP TALK The latest design store topping my list is Nickey Kehoe, an outpost of the covetable LA brand. It’s an absolute gem tucked inside a Greenwich Village brownstone, with a furniture showroom on the upper floor featuring rehabbed vintage pieces and a garden level full of household items with a craft-made quality. I’ve walked away with too many things to count, including these Uashmama placemats from Tuscany that look like leather but are actually waxed paper (much easier to clean, yet totally elevated). HIT THE TILES New builds and blank box rooms have just got a new lease of life thanks to Bert & May’s first Architectural Mouldings collection – a series of four moulded tile silhouettes in encaustic cement that take inspiration from traditional architectural forms, then give them a contemporary twist. They’re designed to add character to plain spaces, so use them to jazz up lifeless walls and rooms lacking architectural definition. PERFECT SHAPE I found Lydia Hardwick’s work through the joys of Instagram. I used to re-share the work of people on my own page that I really admired, and I somehow came across her ceramics as I was scrolling, saving it for a future purchase. The graphic patterns were enough to grab my attention – charming and arresting at the same time. She just understands all the intricacies of shape and form; the silhouettes of her vases are beautiful in and of themselves. Her use of colour is bold yet understated – because she doesn’t include bright shades in any of her work all her pieces can live in any space really easily. ANOTHER LEVEL In 2025, gone are the uptight ‘cocktail sofas’ that offer a stiff perch, replaced by deep, slouchy seating that’s designed to make you kick up your feet and sprawl out. ‘The mood is definitely meant to evoke playfulness; fun and casual,’ says Los Angeles-based interior designer Mimi Shin. although their main home is in the small town of Rumson, New Jersey, Colleen and John Cook had always wanted a place where they could feel and live among the energy and buzz of New York City. It was especially Colleen’s dream; as the executive director of a non-profit theatre company, she is immersed in her passion for the arts and culture every day. you’re right, we don’t ordinarily feature show homes in Livingetc. But this one is different. Decorated by the Dublin-based interior designer Ash Wilson as a jewel in the crown of a 10-house estate, it was sold immediately to a family who also wanted every piece of furniture, every fabric, every carefully considered and nuanced paint colour Ash had chosen for every wall. Only three main colours, but boom, what a palette mic drop. The powerful triumvirate of pour-me-into-a-glass-and-drink-me orange, soothing cornflower blue and electric chartreuse means there’s no need for any other hues, or much more decoration. In fact, this room is actually two colours – the yellow/green arch leads in to it – but one cannot exist without the other and the magic comes from the teamwork. With so much colour action, it’s easy not to notice the space’s small size. It ticks off its job as a dining room, fitting in table, seats, people, meal, and that’s it. THE MAGIC OF MUSHROOMS Daylesford Organic has come up with one of our favourite tabletop collections of the season, nodding to the mushroom-themed revival in homeware – but less cutesy and more elegant. HAPPY HOSTING A series of courtyards intersect this house designed by Mexico City-based architects RA!, including a small raised area with a bar, set just off a living-dining room and another outdoor seating space on the other side. It shows that a smaller courtyard space can be the perfect setting for entertaining: the lush planting and minimalist lighting makes for a cosy, convivial space that only gets more atmospheric as the sun fades. TUCKED AWAY Studio Tashima worked with garden designer Cali Rand to make sure that every inch of this London courtyard garden had a sense of purpose. ‘We incorporated nooks on either side of the central extension, creating moments where the garden visually and spatially interacts with the house,’ says architect Charles Tashima. ‘We spent a fair amount…

UNNATURAL FLOORING We love natural wool carpet and sisal for their organic texture and hard-wearing natures, but if you have little ones or energetic pets running around you might want to opt for something even more practical – in which case, independent British brand Unnatural Flooring might be for you. It has a range of carpet and flooring options that look like real sisal, wool and seagrass fibre but are actually made from durable, stain-resistant synthetic yarns so they’re a breeze to clean, often with just water. With all the warmth from the sunset colours and earthy tones making big design news, it’s perhaps no surprise that shimmering gold is having a moment too. Seen in luxe flashes on chairs, cocktail tables and – most notably – fabrics, it is lending its Midas touch to the most opulent of schemes. Leading the charge is Italian power brand Edra. Its most recent offering, the Minerals collection, is a smart range of fabrics that shimmer and sparkle, each one the colour of a different natural material. ‘When I accidentally came across a collection of stones that seemed to be made of life and colour, I immediately imagined that it could become an extraordinary material to upholster our models,’ says Edra’s vice president Monica Mazzei. ‘Trust is the operative term,’ admits designer Yasmine Ghoniem, referring to the rapport she developed with the owners of this Melbourne Victorian weatherboard house that her studio, YSG, recently reimagined. The interior scheme is a riot of bespoke pattern and energising colour – a surprising departure for a period home, especially since her clients happen to be colour blind. For both owners, a couple with two teenage children, muted tones appear washed out. ‘We decided we could afford to go bold,’ says Yasmine. What happens when something surprising materialises where you would least expect to find it is a story that deserves to be told – especially when it comes to a house that has been part of a family’s history for generations. And so it is with this Puglian townhouse, dating from the early 1900s and now owned by Monica and Andrea, a recently married couple. ‘This house was owned by Andrea’s grandparents. JOCHEN HOLZ London-based contemporary glass artist Jochen Holz started his journey into glass craft with an apprenticeship in scientific lamp working. ‘I loved working with my hands,’ he says, ‘and the challenge to master a difficult material.’ After graduating from the Royal College of Art, Jochen set up his studio in the east end of the city, in Stratford. ‘I always liked the young, arty vibe of Hackney Wick. Miraculously we survived several threads of redevelopment over the years and I am still in the same space.’ His studio remains relatively unchanged and it’s from here that Jochen makes his pieces. His style is wonderfully organic; each design looks somewhat like it has oozed out of a rock or curated its own form. ‘I use a glass-blowing technique called lamp…

REAL WORLD REFERENCES When exploring the world of bathroom brassware, making a not-just-on-Pinterest mood board probably isn’t something that immediately springs to mind. But when you’re dithering between finishes, something physical to compare to other design decisions and see in different lights is just what you need. ‘We always approach the selection of brassware like picking a paint colour,’ says Hollie Milne, co-founding director of Cornwall-based interior design and interior architecture practice Studio Far West. ‘Try to always have a sample on hand to see in situ against tiles, paint colours and vanity selections – it is as integral to the design as a tile choice, so why not sample it in real time, too?’ QUALITY TIME While during a room makeover it’s easy to cut the odd corner here…

CABIN FEVER The smallest in a series of cabins, this delightful place of respite is tucked away in the Ontario hills. Despite the contemporary aesthetic developed by Dubbeldam Architecture + Design, the new build references the quintessential cabin in the woods with its A-frame shape. Its split roof is reminiscent of rocks in the local landscape and the building is softened by natural materials like greyed wood siding and cedar soffits. The geometric windows frame views to the lake and forest. FIRM FOUNDATIONS Technically, this live-work space in Porto isn’t entirely new – it was built on a plot that housed the remnants of a 19th-century building renovation ‘gone awry’, according to architecture studio Oitoo. DESIGN GATHERING February sees designers and tastemakers flock to Stockholm for the city’s annual Design Week – and if you’re not seeing it all over your socials this month, you’ll definitely be watching the trends from it playing out for the rest of the year. As well as events and launches in showrooms around the capital, there’s also the Stockholm Furniture Fair, whose guest of honour this year is Faye Toogood. In her installation, Manufracture, she explores the interaction between designers and makers, featuring some of her personal archive of models and prototypes – as well as her latest furniture collection, Assemblage 8 (pictured).
