The BR class EM2 (later class 77) Co-Co electric locos were built in 1953-4 at Gorton, with Metropolitan-Vickers electrical equipment, to handle passenger traffic between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield Victoria via the 1,500v DC Woodhead line. There were seven locos in the class, numbered 27000 to 27006, and all carried names from Greek mythology starting, appropriately, with ‘Electra’.
The entire class was withdrawn in 1968 with the rundown of the Woodhead line prior to withdrawal of through passenger trains, and the following year all seven locos were sold to Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), arriving in September. 27005 was cannibalised for spare parts and scrapped, while the rest received modifications including rewiring, changing the driving position from left to right, removing the boilers, replacing the compressors, replacing the pantographs and strengthening the…
