The 4-6-2 (Pacific) wheel arrangement was not used greatly in Poland, indeed over the three classes that existed there was only a total of 47. The first two machines were of a purely experimental nature and did not lead to any production orders for the type. No further Pacifics were built in Poland, the other examples coming to Poland from Germany and Russia as part of post WW2 reparations. The first examples were designated Pm36-1 and 2, the first being streamlined as was the current vogue in the thirties when they were built and the second of conventional outline for comparison purposes. Post WW2, Poland received examples of ex DRG classes 03 and 0310, the first being conventional 2 cylinder locomotives (36) and the latter 3 cylinder streamlined locomotives (9).…

One of the Wonders of the World has to be the Iguassu Falls in one of the remotest areas of the world, in northern Argentina on the border with Brazil and Uruguay. Iguazú Falls or Iguaçu Falls are waterfalls of the Iguazu River on the border of the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná. Together, they make up the largest waterfall system in the world. The falls divide the river into the upper and lower Iguazu. The Iguazu River rises near the heart of the city of Curitiba. For most of its course, the river flows through Brazil; however, most of the falls are on the Argentine side. When I saw it on a very dull 28 June 1974, the museum comprised simply a row of five locos next to the loco shed: these were nos. 146, 150, 14, 96 and 110. Shunting in the background of the photo can be seen I class 0-6-0T no. 48 (Dübs 1513/1881). The narrow-gauge railway known as ‘Le Petit Train de la Haute Somme’ is a 7km long, 60cm gauge heritage railway located in the Somme area, which is numbered as French Department 80 and runs between Froissy and Dompierre. The railway is run by the operating group APPEVA and that stands for Association Picardie pour la Preservation et l’Entretien des Véhicles Anciens. The main depot is at Froissy by the Somme canal and the railway then travels east towards Cappy, before it climbs via a zig-zag up onto the Santerre Plateau to stop short of Dompierre; hence the railway is also known as the Chemin de fer Froissy-Cappy-Dompierre or CFCD, which I will continue to use in this abbreviated form, in order to identify this operation. Rügensche Bäderbahn "Rasender Roland" (Putbus - Göhren) - 15-18 May. The timetables had changed little since my last visit ten years ago, but there were major changes to the infrastructure. Göhren station had seen investment, but Putbus station was almost unrecognisable. Very large investments have been / are being made to the whole station area. A new large loco shed and works have been built. They were not in full use as it was not yet complete, but locos were being serviced there. An extensive new carriage shed has also been built. Two new or rebuilt platforms (numbers 4 and 5) are now present. Most surprising of all however, was the on-going construction of new embankments leading to and from the old concrete bridge over the standard-gauge line to Bergen…

Close to Vienna, and well worth a visit, is the Heizhaus railway depot and museum. Heizhaus (meaning boiler house) is also known as Strasshof, where it lies, and also Silberwald. If you are travelling to it, from Vienna, take train S1 from central Vienna, to Silberwald (approx. 8 mins) as from this station it is just a 5 minute walk. The depot is huge. A rectangular 10 road shed, faces a great network of tracks, and everywhere there are locos coaches wagons, cranes, snowploughs, signals, everything! The origin of the depot goes all the way back to the beginning of railways in Austria. In 1837 the first steam standard gauge railway ran from central Vienna to Deutsche Wagram, the Nordbahn.
