Beware! Your favourite antimicrobial workout shirt or water-repellent hiking jacket may contain some surprising and potentially toxic chemicals. A recent Swedish report found that 10% of the 2 400 chemicals found in an analysis of fabrics could pose a risk to human health – and less than 1% are regulated in the US. While a single piece of clothing may contain tiny amounts, exposure could add up, researchers note. Workout gear poses a special risk, because sweat and movement may release more bad-acting substances. Troubling compounds found in activewear include phthalates, perfluorinated compounds, triclosan and silver nanoparticles. In many cases, these chemicals might also pose a risk for wildlife, as they’re laundered out of clothes and wind up in streams, rivers and lakes. One 2012 European report even found cancer-causing…

I’ve written repeatedly about the problem of “natural” on food labels, but the issue just doesn’t go away. It won’t, until the FDA decides to rule on what it means. Now Consumer Reports has done a survey of public understanding of the term. The survey reveals that 62% of respondents want foods to be “natural”. When they see the claim on a food package, they believe it has been verified independently. Oops. They also believe that “natural” means no artificial ingredients (correct, according to the FDA’s non-definition) or GMOs (incorrect).
