BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO: FOUNDATION PAPER PIECING Foundation Paper Piecing, or FPP as it is sometimes referred to, can be used to make simple blocks, like Flying Geese, or complicated designs that would be hard to achieve with classic piecing. FPP starts out with a design printed on paper which you use to align your fabrics in the correct positions and then sew along the lines. We find the story of how you released your first fabric line so inspiring. Tell us a little more about what happened when you first decided to take the plunge into fabric design. Designing fabric for me was born of need. I was making quilts as fast as I could back then, really just trying to learn and hone my craft. There were only a couple of fabric designers that were making fabric that spoke to my particular tastes and they were only putting out one or two collections a year at most. You’ve mentioned previously that the ombre diamonds print from Moon Garden started off as just diamonds, which you felt wasn’t a ‘Tula Pink print’. What is a Tula Pink print? Is it all instinctual? I like to really pack in the details. I can’t help myself. I knew I needed something in the collection that was edited down, something bold and graphic to break up the big organic prints. I adore a diamond shape – they are so elegant and you can really play with the proportions to change its character. "Every collection is a reaction to the collection that came before it in some way. Tiny Beasts was all about small prints so the natural pivot to that was to go big! My True Colors collection is designed to be like the back-up dancers to my main show “Core Collections”. With True Colors made up of small supporting prints, it allows me the space to create larger, more complicated prints without having to leave room for those smaller prints that a quilt requires. “The longest piece that I worked on by far was the “Hissy Fit” print. I knew that drawing a snake was going to be very risky because people have very strong feelings about them, including myself. I am actually terrified of snakes in real life but this is just fabric, not the real thing. I wouldn’t really want a bunch of birds landing on my head either but snakes are different… I knew that if I was going to do it then she had to overcome a lot.
