A Canadian electronics firm has been caught red-handed after reselling over 100,000 Apple products that were meant to have been recycled. Geep is estimated to have sold at least 103,845 iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches instead of dismantling them and recycling components. Geep pointed the finger at three of its own executives. Apple is suing the firm anyway for lost profit and £10.2 million in compensation. The scam came to light after Apple carried out an audit and discovered that products it had sent for recycling were missing. It then noticed that some 18% of those missing devices were active on various networks.…

The European Union’s ongoing battle against big tech took a turn in October when it announced draft legislation that would stop products from being sold with pre-installed apps – a move that could directly affect Apple devices like the Mac, iPad and iPhone. The EU’s Digital Services Act aims to create a level playing field for third-parties, giving consumers the choice over what to install on their devices. The Financial Times says of the EU bill: “The draft suggests that Big Tech may be banned from preferential treatment of their own services on their sites or platforms, to the detriment of rivals, and that companies should not be allowed to pre-install their own applications on hardware devices, such as laptops or phones, or force other companies to exclusively pre-install their…

There are a couple of aesthetic shifts across the new macOS. One is the standardisation of the icons in the sidebar of Finder windows and default apps. Catalina’s media apps had a neat set of their own, with white symbols over rounded rectangles with gradient fills. They’ve all now been rationalised into a wireframe design, and the first few icons in each sidebar take on an ‘accent colour’. This is blue for the Finder, while Music is red, Books orange, Podcasts purple, Photos, er, blue again, the App Store… also blue, and TV a nervous turquoise. News didn’t get the memo, and has white-on-gradient squircles. The coloured icons look rather weak in Light Mode, and there’s little logic to the use of colour. 1 Allow screen recording Click on the Record Screen folder to open it, then on Record Window. If you haven’t used this before, you’ll need to enable it in the Screen Recording list in the Privacy tab. Click Continue when you’ve done that. 2 Make your recording Start recording by clicking on the window you want to record. Many of the tools in Parallels Toolbox add items to your menu bar, and can make it grow out into the middle of the screen if you’re not careful. When it’s getting overloaded, click on the Hide Menu Items tool to fix this. Drag items you’re only going to use occasionally to its alternate menu bar, which you access through its special menu item. These can include regular macOS menu bar items such as Spotlight, which can’t normally be removed. As with most of the other tools, this is useful both inside a macOS VM and in your host macOS.…

1 Import from your Mac Click Contacts. Under On my iPhone, click All. Now click Import from Contacts. Select which entries you want to import, then click Copy to Device. Conversion to Apple File System Q I intend upgrading my Mac mini from Sierra to Mojave. It has an internal SSD and a hard disk. When they’re converted to APFS during macOS installation, will they be turned into a Fusion Drive? How can I prevent that from happening? A When you upgrade any Mac from a version of macOS prior to the introduction of Apple’s new file system APFS to Mojave or later, the installer automatically changes the format of its startup disk from older HFS+ to APFS. Q Recently, I got warnings that my iMac 27-inch 2017’s 2TB Fusion Drive is in a ‘critical condition’, according to both Kaspersky Security Cloud and TechTool Pro. Disk Utility doesn’t report any problems, though. So which is right? A Kaspersky isn’t a specialist disk utility, but a current version of TechTool Pro should definitely be taken seriously. How seriously isn’t so straightforward to answer. Determining imminent disk failure is based largely on the disk’s SMART indicators. Those vary considerably across different models of disk, and some use different values. This requires the software reading them to interpret values according to the make and model of disk, something which doesn’t always work out. Q My MacBook Air 2019 drives two 4K displays, which I normally leave running all the time. Every week or so, the Mac just freezes and I have to restart. How can I stop that? A This appears to be not uncommon experience at present, particularly if those external displays are scaling their image rather than being used at their default resolution. What happens is that the WindowServer process steadily consumes more memory until it finally freezes altogether, which you can observe in Activity Monitor. It then needs to be restarted, which can often be accomplished by logging out and back in, provided that it hasn’t gone too far. WindowServer is responsible for compositing individual windows and other items to be shown on the display, ensuring that they’re correctly layered…

1 Turn it on You can enable or disable the new handwashing detection feature in Settings > Handwashing. There are just two options here: one for the time and another for reminders, so you remember to wash your hands when your get home. 2 Allow location sharing Handwashing reminders need to know where you are, so you’ll need to enable location awareness for it in the Watch app on your phone. In a 2016 presentation at the Defcon security conference, researcher Anthony Rose presented the findings of his investigation into smart lock security. Using reasonably common tools, Rose found he was able to successfully break into 12 of the 16 locks he tested. Four essentially had no security whatsoever, sending their data over plain text, effectively broadcasting passwords to anyone listening out in the vicinity. A further four could be breached by replay attacks, where communications sent to the lock could be recorded and simply replayed – even though that data was encrypted, the same encrypted data was valid for a later unlock. The Photos app had a visual overhaul in Catalina, with a new variable-grid Days view to showcase your pics. In the left-hand column is an entry for Files, which is useful for viewing any items you have saved to Apple’s Files app on your iOS device. As on your iPhone or iPad, iMazing divides your files by app, making it easy to find what you are looking for. Setting up a RAID system Q I’m just about to connect an external Thunderbolt 3 four-slot SSD RAID to my Mac. Should I use AppleRAID, and should I enable TRIM? A You currently have two options if you want to configure this as a RAID drive: format it using Disk Utility into AppleRAID, or install OWC’s SoftRAID and use that instead. The latter offers a wider choice of RAID levels, but relies on a kernel extension which can be tricky to use in recent versions of macOS, or with Macs equipped with a T2 chip. If you’re happy with choosing between just two RAID levels 0 (striped) and 1 (mirrored), but not both, then you may find AppleRAID best until SoftRAID version 6 ships. 1 Listen in The Noise app listens to the sound around you and will warn you if you’re listening to potentially dangerous levels that could damage your hearing. You can set the threshold for those warnings in Settings > Noise. 2 See the levels Noise data is shared with Health on your iPhone, so you can take a look at the overall trends. This can be useful to see if you’re being exposed to too much noise at work. For those of us who are forever dropping or scratching our iPhones, help could soon be at hand. A patent application submitted by Apple in January, but which has only just come to light, suggests Cupertino may have found a solution – in the form of a self-healing display. The patent application – Electronic Devices With Flexible Display Cover Layers – appears to be attempting to solve a problem common to foldable phones like the Samsung Galaxy Fold, where dirt and other detritus can cause damage to the display. Not only does this add more weight to the rumour that Apple is working on a foldable phone, but that a solution to those display snafus could be coming. Rather than update macOS’ Messages app, Apple has effectively brought the iPadOS version to Big Sur using its Catalyst development software. It looks and feels a lot more like the mobile versions. Animojis, which respond to your facial expressions, aren’t possible on current Macs, but Big Sur intriguingly contains support for the required depth-sensing Face ID camera. For now, you can design your own Memoji and apply it to messages as a choice of stickers with appropriate expressions; send messages with effects like balloons and confetti; and even use ‘invisible ink’ that appears blurred until the recipient swipes over it. The LaserWriter was one of Apple’s most significant products, but, as you might have guessed, the story of the laser printer starts at Xerox. Twenty years after the company sold its first photocopier based on the xerographic process, combining photography with electrostatic printing, Gary Starkweather replaced photography with a laser beam, making it possible to output an image created digitally.
