With its usual fanfare, Apple announced the newest Mac operating system at its annual World Wide Developers Conference in June 2013, doing away with the typical bigcat naming convention that OS X is known for and replacing it with a new identity derived from the world-renowned surfing spot on the coast of California. Despite featuring the official license, NASCAR: Redline isn’t a racing game, strictly speaking. Instead, it’s more like a careermanagement sim: as a fresh-faced rookie in the Sprint Cup Series, you must win races to finance new car parts and pit crew–training sessions to climb to the top of the standings. Off the track, you’ll equip parts and tune your engine through a series of onscreen prompts, while the races themselves consist of adjusting tactics (which range from “Hold Back” to “All Out”) and making pit stops. Crucial turns in each race are navigated through finicky touch-screen events, but the bulk of Redline consists of budgets, car parts, and menu screens. And while external USB or Thunderbolt drives are reasonably affordable and easy to use, for maximum portability and minimum clutter, most people prefer internal storage. Renaming a single file on your Mac is simple enough: click the file, press Return, type the new name, and press Return again. The problem arises as soon as you need to do more than a handful of files—like when you take a load of pictures on your digital camera. These will all have names like “IMG_001” or “DSC_002.” It would be far more helpful if you could rename a whole batch of these images to something more meaningful—“Maui 01,” “Maui 02,” and so on. When kids play these days, they’re often either playing with toys or using mobile devices like the iPad. Game developer Azooca is attempting to kill two birds with one stone with its Izooca platform. Using radio-frequency-identification (RFID) technology—à la Activision’s hit Skylanders games—the Izooca system allows you to place RFID-chip-armed physical figurines on an RFID-reading surface, which enables you to play as the characters in a game. Two advances in external device–hookup tech may soon make Apple rethink its use of Thunderbolt as its high-end connection scheme. PDFpen Scan+ lets you use an iOS device’s camera as a portable scanner, and snapped documents can be cropped (automatically or manually), enhanced, and saved as PDF files before being shared in a variety of ways. Smile has gone the extra mile by adding optical character recognition (OCR), which is an optional step after the file is saved. Frustratingly, this task takes several minutes to perform, only to produce unformatted text that has to be copied and pasted into another app—and the OCR results are wildly inaccurate in most cases.
