Apps like djay and Traktor DJ have been a big hit with tablet turntablists, but Pacemaker aims to disrupt that market with one very unique feature: it’s the only iPad DJ software that comes with support for Spotify’s streaming-music service. The interface is streamlined and colorful, which makes spinning and scratching a blast, especially for casual and first-time spinners. Pacemaker’s waveform display for loaded tunes is a simplistic and low-res affair, however, and we found the app less than spot-on with detecting the native BPM (beats per minute) of loaded music. Taking place in a dreamlike version of mythical Japan, Tengami is all cherry-blossom groves, abandoned pagodas, and gently rolling seas, painted in pastel pinks and blues and set to ethereal music. Still images are pretty enough, but Tengami is defined by the cues it takes from old pop-up storybooks: secret passages are hidden beneath paper flaps, and new areas spring into existence with each turn of the page. Delicately unfolding the world with your finger is satisfyingly tactile, and most of the puzzles involve creating new pathways or searching for clues in the creases and crannies that appear midfold. Oquonie revels in obfuscation. On the surface, it’s a simple isometric arcade adventure. Taking the role of a dopey-looking cartoon bipedal dinosaur in a suit, you amble about a maze-like office complex, bumping into photocopiers that bestow you with cards and simultaneously spew gibberish via cryptic glyphs. After an encounter with a triceratops, you’re propelled into a maze where something’s amiss; your mental map breaks after taking a few turns, and the game’s façade cracks within the Escherlike locale. Oquonie’s simple and linear core is buried under layers of complication and willful confusion, and the game lurches wildly between arresting intrigue and sheer frustration. The Loop Fob is a plastic widget that works in conjunction with the free Loop Wallet app to securely read (and store) credit or debit card info using a swiper on the back. So, when Apple announced that it would no longer be supporting or developing iWeb in 2012, the quest for a suitable replacement began in earnest. EverWeb, from RAGE Software, aims to be just that—and, for the most part, it’s right on target. EverWeb’s interface, while not a carbon copy, will be immediately familiar to anyone who’s used iWeb. Like they do every year, game-makers from around the world converged on the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA this past March to show off their newest software (and hardware) at the Game Developers Conference—including plenty of offerings for iOS and Mac. One of the big topics at GDC was virtual reality, and though Sony’s Morpheus for PlayStation 4 might have gotten the most attention, iOS owners aren’t being left out. Handy Photo’s unique interface makes it fast and fun to edit images on your iPhone or iPad. Name a feature and it’s probably on Handy Photo’s checklist, along with convenient tricks such as Move Me, which allows an object from one photo to be transported to another in just a few taps. For those who aren’t so easily impressed, Handy Photo also includes Magic Crop, which lets photos be “uncropped” by dragging any edge beyond the available image, prompting the app to automatically heal the remaining space left behind. Peek Calendar pushes the iOS 7 human-interface guidelines to their limits with its ridiculously minimal, gesture-heavy approach. But while it tries to limit the amount of time you spend interacting with your calendar, its unique concept is ultimately too smart for its own good. We had to visit the tutorial before even starting, and we made several more trips due to confusing design. The cheerful, seasonal colors are a nice touch, as are the variously sized bars to represent how much of your day is occupied. Arithmetic has never been so strangely fun as in Calculords, a collectible-card game that puts math calculations at its very core. It has a bit of a learning curve; the computer-controlled opponents give as good as they get, complete with snappy taunts and humorous one-liners, and you can easily find yourself locked in battles for hours without noticing how much time has passed. Cards can only be played through pairing with a number tile of the same value, and you’ll need to add, subtract, and multiply numbers to make the values that match the cards you’d like to play. Once your files are uploaded to Dropbox, the service lets you do much more with them than let them sit there waiting to be accessed. You can import details from various sources, then find people from any group, quickly create a correctly addressed email, and more. Decades of fascinating and enlightening documentary work by filmmaker Ken Burns forms the core of his selftitled app, which draws on close to four hours of footage compiled from documentaries covering a huge breadth of material relating to American history. If there’s one thing that Out There expertly imparts, it’s that space can be a cold, lonely, and rather depressing place. The dangerous homeward journey of a cosmic explorer lost amongst the stars proves pretty grim in this turn-based sci-fi explorer. With fuel, oxygen, and ship-repair materials in short supply, every light jump in the right direction also pushes you closer to the potential for a premature demise. It’s gloomy stuff to be sure, but it pairs well with the intensely moody atmosphere and comic-book presentation, which make the experience feel distinct from what’s come before. Two decades past its prime and with a purist-infuriating new look, Final Fantasy VI’s leap to touchscreens is hardly flawless, but it’s nonetheless impressive—and it’s an easy way to slip into a true classic of ’90s console role-playing games. FFVI assembles a cast of surprisingly well-developed characters around an amnesiac young woman who’s being sought by a sinister empire for the strange, magical powers she wields. It’s not a unique setup, but the narrative distinguishes itself by leaping straight into the action with little exposition, and then jumping almost seamlessly from character to character while it gradually establishes its world. Of all the technologies Apple ignored over the years, wireless charging seems like one Steve Jobs should have embraced. This snub has now been rectified thanks to ingenious third-party engineering, although the end result often creates as many challenges as it attempts to solve. The iQi Mobile Receiver is a slim patch that piggybacks onto a current-generation iPhone or iPod touch.
