Since the macOS Mojave reveal back in June, Apple has been teasing us with several new betas, the latest of which (version 4 – at the time of writing) shows off a new Dynamic Desktop: Solar Gradient. IN THE PAST, if you needed more graphics processing power for pro video editing or other demanding uses, you might swap out the graphics processing unit (GPU) in your desktop Mac for a more powerful card. But this is not possible in any of the current Mac range. At WWDC 2017, Apple announced an alternative: support for external GPUs, which it duly delivered almost 10 months later in the High Sierra 10.13.4 Combo Update. AMAZON’S ALEXA ASSISTANT now has voice control on iOS. This feature has been available on Android since January, but up to now, although you could use the Alexa app on iPhone to customize Alexa-controlled smart home devices, you could not use your voice to do so. Now you can ask questions, play music, operate devices, and use Alexa Skills by talking to your iPhone. Asking for weather, sports, calendar, and movie data will bring up visual info on your screen. However, Siri still has one advantage that should keep it your default voice assistant on iOS: You’ll need to open the Alexa app before giving it commands.…

Hello! Great networking issue a few months back, but I have a couple of questions. My first is: where do I go from Time Capsule? But apps are all different, and the App Store’s preset price bands haven’t always suited developers, especially when complicated by arbitrary adjustments for exchange rate fluctuations. For apps offering content rather than functionality, publishers wanted an ongoing subscription model, which was still missing at the launch of the magazine-friendly iPad but eventually arrived in 2011. WE’RE AN APPLE-DEDICATED magazine, so you might expect us to lean naturally towards HomeKit-friendly devices. HOW DO I UPDATE MY HOMEPODS? If you’ve followed our advice of waiting a few days to see if problems arise with iOS software updates, you might have turned off HomePod’s auto-updates, too, when you set it up. ACCORDING TO BLOOMBERG, Adobe is working on a full version of Photoshop for iPad, expected to arrive sometime in 2019. Adobe already offers a range of mobile apps, each delivering a slice of its flagship apps’ features including Photoshop Express for photo editing and Photoshop Fix for quick retouching. The indications are, however, that a mobile version of the full Photoshop is in the works, bolstering Apple’s positioning of the iPad as a credible alternative to a laptop. WHEN WE’RE SHOOTING so many pics on our smartphones, it’s nice to know they’re being backed up automatically. iOS can sync them to your iCloud Photo Library on the fly. To turn this on, go to Settings > iCloud > Photos and ensure iCloud Photo Library is switched on. Note that every photo you take will count against your iCloud storage and push you towards the point where you need to pay for more. To turn on this feature on a Mac, go to System Preferences’ iCloud pane, put a tick next to Photos, click Options next to it, then tick iCloud Photo Library. A BACK IN JUNE 2007, the imminent iPhone was a central theme of Apple’s WWDC keynote. “Now, what about developers?” asked Steve Jobs, to cheers from the audience. APPLE HAS LAUNCHED a service program for 2015-2017 MacBook and MacBook Pro models that are experiencing keyboard issues. If you are finding that letters unexpectedly repeat or do not appear after a key is pressed, or keys feel “sticky” or do not respond, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to check if your machine qualifies. Coverage applies up to four years after purchase. The shop may replace faulty keys or the entire keyboard. THE SEVEN-YEAR PATENT dispute between Samsung and Apple over the design of Samsung’s smartphones – and subsequently tablets – has been settled out of court on undisclosed terms. Apple first sued Samsung in April 2011, four months after the release of the Nexus S, claiming it copied the iPhone. In the first trial in August 2012 a US jury awarded Apple over $1 billion in damages, but an appeal judge ordered a retrial. More than 50 lawsuits, appeals, and countersuits followed, with the battle going all the way to the US Supreme Court in addition to raging in numerous other jurisdictions around the world. LOST OR STOLEN device? So long as it’s signed in to iCloud and can get online over Wi-Fi or a mobile network, iCloud can help you recover it. The Find My iPhone app for iOS and the Find iPhone feature at iCloud.com can locate not only phones, but also Macs, iPads and iPod touches tied to your account. When you tap something, it will move – a filing cabinet will slide forward and bump the bomb in the opposite direction, or a ceiling fan will rotate the bomb around.
