Just hours after Apple pushed the iOS 16.0.2 update to address several nagging bugs affecting the new iPhone 14 and early iOS 16 updaters, a strange Mail bug has been discovered that could lock users out of their email account. Dubbed Mailjack, VPN Tracker (fave.co/3xTxirq) has uncovered a bug that lets anyone take down your email account by sending a message from an improperly formatted account. VPN Tracker found that an email from an address with two quotes (“”@macworld.com for example) will cause Mail on iOS 16 to repeatedly crash. VPN Tracker has set up a way to test the crash on your iPhone, which requires double opt-in verification to prevent pranks. Apple has improved macOS’s upgrade process tremendously over the years. With recent releases, it’s rare something goes pear-shaped and prevents an upgrade from completing. However, you can sometimes wind up in an inbetween state, as one reader found. Your accounts migrated with all their data, but on each restart, macOS loses changes to start-up items, System Preferences settings, and even app registrations. The start-up volume passes all tests with flying colours: safe mode, First Aid in Disk Utility, reinstalling the operating system from macOS Recovery, and the like. With the Terminal in macOS, you can save lots of time and type less by using the command history functions built into the Terminal shell. The shell keeps a record of the commands you run, and you can access this history with a few simple keystrokes to run commands again or edit them so you don’t have to retype them. You can check to see what commands are in your history at any time by running the history command. When you type history and press Return, Terminal displays a list of the commands in the history list. Apple made it easier to resize partitions – logical divisions of a disk drive into separate mountable volumes with different properties – several releases of macOS ago. A Macworld reader resized their main volume to 369GB to set up a Boot Camp partition, but then realized it was too small. They wondered how to fix this. Hashtags became a useful way to track tweets across topics many years ago on Twitter. They spread to other social networks and into organizing apps. Apple brought hashtags (as plain old ‘tags’) to Notes and Reminders with iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS 12 Monterey. You can use tags as ad-hoc categorization. Instead of building a set of hierarchical categories or having to create a bunch tags first that you then apply, you can simply type the hash (#) followed by text with no spaces.
