THIS is a first focal plane scope with a 34mm main tube, designed from the ground up for extreme long-range shooting. About two years ago, Michael Rodgers of Lynx Optics discussed the prototype with me and it is clear he used the input from local shooters in the final design. For starters, he ensured that the numbers and indicators on the turrets are larger than usual – not as big, for example, as those on the LX3 2.5–15x50 Tactical, but still big enough for ageing eyes to see properly. Magnum reader, Chris Petrou, alerted us to an incident he experienced with his reloading equipment. Some eight months ago when he last reloaded, Chris left some IMR Target powder in the powder measure of his reloader. He recently decided to do some reloading and to his amazement found that the tube holding the powder had ‘melted’ where it was in contact with the powder. He asked if this is normal? Chris also pointed out that the bottle the powder comes in is plastic, and asked if it is safe to store power in those containers? DURING the days of the muzzle-loading military pistol, a pair of these heavy pieces was carried in holsters hung over the pommel of a saddle. Private citizens carried smaller pistols in their coat pockets or hidden elsewhere on their person. However, with the invention of multi-shot revolvers, carry methods changed. STEVEN BEZUIDENHOUT, formerly from Parow Arms, manufactures suppressors in three different sizes for .22 calibre rifles, ARs and hunting rifles. For testing he made me a suppressor for a .22lr with a ½x20 thread. The suppressor is machined from T6 aluminium and has a stainless steel thread insert. Steven explained that he starts by cutting a 6 metre tube to the desired length. On each piece, step-tubes are machined to ensure concentricity. The ends are then threaded. After this, the diameter of the rear section of the suppressor is reduced at an angle for a slim look and the end-caps are machined. What are the main requirements for optimum intrinsic accuracy in a rifle? Briefly, a rigid action (usually solid bottomed, i.e. single-shot), a rigid (read ‘thick’) barrel to reduce vibrations and which is free-floating for consistency in vibrations; a one-piece bolt which perfectly aligns with the chamber and bore and has precisely uniform locking lugs to ensure such alignment; a light, cleanly breaking trigger release, and finally a rigid and stable synthetic stock in which the action is perfectly bedded. CERTAIN practice routines on the shooting range have drawbacks, some serious, like getting into the habit of only putting up a target and trying to hit the A-zone from a fixed distance. Although better than nothing, many shooters see this as sufficient and declare that they are ready to defend themselves and their loved ones. Practising some real-world scenarios makes much more sense and learning to shoot with one hand only is such an example.
