A mid all the California winemaking families over the years who've become part of the Golden State’s history, there is one that has flown a bit under the radar. Macallan Horizon Edrington has released the Macallan Horizon, a new whisky debuting in collaboration with luxury car maker Bentley. The single malt Scotch whisky ($50,000 a 700-ml.) is bottled at 46.6% abv and blends together six first-fill Sherry-seasoned oak casks to create the limited release. Macallan Horizon is packaged in a horizontal glass container, enclosed in a ribbon of aluminum, and surrounded by a wood and copper sculpture. Gallo Offloads Washington Wines…. Seattle’s Ackley Brands has purchased Columbia Winery and Hogue Cellars from Gallo for an undisclosed sum. The buy bolsters Ackley’s wine portfolio, which also includes Montinore Estate, Tidalstar Vineyard, and First Sight. Columbia and Hogue will add roughly 130,000 cases to Ackley’s portfolio. At press time the deal was expected to close on April 23, with Ackley intending to retain Columbia and Hogue’s employees. Off-Premise News: Kroger-Albertsons Work To Gain Merger Approval Kroger and Albertsons are set to divest more stores as they continue to seek FTC approval for their proposed $25 billion merger. The two companies will now sell an additional 166 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers—owner of Piggly Wiggly and Grand Union—for a deal that includes a total of 579 stores across 19 states for $2.9 billion. According to Kroger and Albertsons, the upgraded divestiture addresses the concerns regulators laid out, expands C&S into new geographies with better capitalization, and ensures no stores will close as a result of the merger. Rum faced another challenging year in 2023, with overall sales slipping 4.5% to 21.38 million 9-liter cases, marking its tenth decline in the past 12 years and the first time since 2005 that the category sold fewer than 22 million cases, according to Impact Databank. But like most spirits categories these days, the super-premium end of rum is a bright spot: Rums in the $25-and-over range are projected to approach 1 million cases in the U.S. by year-end. Diageo has appointed non-executive director John Manzoni as its incoming chairman. Manzoni will replace Javier Ferran in the role next February. Ferran will retire from the board after serving as chair since 2017. Manzoni joined Diageo’s board in October 2020, after serving as CEO of the UK Civil Service from 2014 to 2020. He’s currently chair of FTSE-listed multinational energy business SSE plc and a non-executive director at engineering and technology business KBR.
