The beautiful islands of the central and southern Bahamas are known for their picturesque flats and productive fishing grounds. But the lives of the residents of those islands changed drastically last October when Hurricane Joaquin turned breathtaking landscapes into jumbled heaps of destruction. Joaquin stalled on top of the islands for more than 50 hours, and the 165 mph winds and flooding caused over $60 million in property damage to homes, marinas and infrastructure. Locals were literally stranded in trees and trapped inside cars. Long Island, Crooked Island and San Salvador were only three of the many hit by the storm; today, some parts barely resemble the way many of us remember them. They hold a special place in our hearts, and they need our help. In the wake of…
editor@marlinmag.com FISH OUT OF WATER Significant pop-up satellite research recently highlighted in Marlin [ Conservation, March 2016] provides sound evidence against boating and excessive handling of white marlin before release. This work by John Graves and Lela Schlenker at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science represents pioneering work that should further encourage recreational fishermen to exercise proper releasing techniques on all species, especially billfish. Simply put, even a short period of time out of water is critical to survival. This is an example of some of the best functional fisheries biology that can be practiced because scientific results are directly and quickly applicable to improving catch-and-release techniques and outcomes. I’d encourage a similar testing on Atlantic sailfish to evaluate these results. Great job to all and thanks for the report!…
BALLYHOO BLISS Austin Coit shot this unique underwater perspective of the ever-important ballyhoo. Coit jumped in with his Ikelite housing to join the frenzy and comments, “They were feeding so voraciously that I couldn’t scare them away if I tried.” LOCATION In the Florida Keys, catching ballyhoo is just another part of the daily routine. After the crew made quick work of the ballyhoo, they were processed for future dead-bait fishing trips this summer. BITE TRACKER Stay current with the best bites from the top billfish destinations around the globe at marlinmag.com/travel. WHERE JUNE/JULY The dog days of summer are upon us, and the marlin fishing is excellent in many destinations. Cape Verde is a top choice for both numbers and size; during this time of year in 2015, Big Oh released 17 blue marlin in one day and weighed a 1,254-pounder on another. It’s remote and windy, but the fishing can be well worth the journey to this hot spot.…
