An auction of equipment, machinery and tractors was held at Epworth near Doncaster on March 14 under the instructions of N&R Lindley due to the farm being sold. Cheffins were in charge of proceedings with Bill King and Oliver Godfrey taking turns in selling the various lots during the sale. A good crowd had gathered as they were sold, most of which had been new to the farm. The condition of the John Deeres was excellent, especially since at least four of them were over 20 years-old. At the cheaper end of the market was a 1996 6600 Power Quad four-wheel drive that had got 8,241 hours on the clock and still sold for £17,800, while a 6900 Power Quad from 1995 did slightly better by selling for £19,000. Last weekend Farmer Brown and I had a pleasant evening of nostalgia, looking through our old family photographs armed with a magnifying glass, because it’s gone a bit like that here (though Farmer Brown likes to blame our energy saving lightbulbs for his eyesight problems as he says they are weak). Scotland welcomed Tractor World’s new venture, and there was a buzz of excitement around the historic showground, writes Bob Weir. The Royal Highland Showground is one of the most prestigious arenas in Scotland and is next door to Edinburgh airport. It is only a short distance from two of the country’s major motorways, and the new Queensferry Crossing over the Firth of Forth. The site is owned by the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland and was originally opened in 1960. The showground was recently given a £75m upgrade and attracts over one million visitors each year. The Malcolm Stammers and friends sale, organised by Peter Love in association with HJ Pugh, on Saturday March 17 (originally to be staged March 3, but cancelled owing to snow) saw two world sale records achieved. It took place on hard standing at Paul Rackham’s site near Snetterton, Norfolk, in what was described as the coldest sale many had ever attended with snow flurries chucked in. Over 90 per cent of the 50 vintage and classic tractors sold in this 200-lot sale with two world records set, one for the Norfolk registered 1948 Field-Marshall Series 2 Contractor at £14,600 in grade 4 condition and the other for a 1965 International 614 in grade 4.9 at £7,100. Well-known former haulage contractor Allen W Brown built up a considerable collection of vintage and classic preserved tractors. Now 70, he has decided just to keep his ploughing tractor and put the rest up for sale on Saturday May 26 at Knayton, Thirsk, Yorkshire.
