If all you’re interested in is reliability, then you need to specifically look for that. A good rule of thumb is to go with trusted brands with good, solid warranties or recovery services. Seagate, Noctua, Crucial, Seasonic, EVGA, Corsair, and Samsung are a few that come to mind. Additionally, think about reducing moving components to a minimum. Anything that spins or has mechanical parts is likely to break. Get rid of anything that can add additional unnecessary heat, and find components that are well built and secure: M.2 drives instead of 2.5-inch drives; better and more robust cooled graphics cards; air towers instead of AIOs, and big 140mm fans instead of 120mm ones. NOW THAT WE’VE identified our core parts and what we need, it’s time to move on to deciding exactly what case we’re going to use and how to check compatibility. It goes without saying that if you want the simplest build possible, get a big chassis; something on the bigger end of a midtower or ATX build will do you wonders. NVIDIA’S LAUNCH of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 graphics cards took place on January 30. As many predicted, both sets of ‘Blackwell’ GPUs sold out quickly. Some buyers even camped outside retailer Micro Center. However, based on user reports, some stores had fewer than a dozen units. This was anticipated, as Nvidia representatives had warned the public that the number of these GPUs would be highly limited at launch. How do you pick between Intel and AMD when it comes to choosing your processor? The reality is there’s very little difference between the user experience on both platforms. If you hid all the programs, all the hardware info and details, and put two blind systems side-by-side, you’d struggle to notice the difference. THIS MONTH, I was doing a bit of research on a phenomenon that’s been afflicting the tech industry. Namely, how the cost of PC parts has skyrocketed over the last decade. IF YOU’VE READ this far and you’re looking at the annotations, you’ll have realized that we made some pretty significant changes after the build was complete, namely swapping around the SSDs and adding a point of support for the GPU itself. No sooner had we gotten over our New Year hangovers, we found ourselves headed to Las Vegas to attend this year’s Consumer Electronics Show—the biggest event of the year for new PC products. BEFORE WE GET ON to the actual process of picking parts, we need to decide how to allocate that money. We’ve got a few sample studies below that should hopefully help answer some of those questions. GAMING In short, if you’re building a rig in 2025, and are solely interested in gaming, you need to start with a discussion on what your target resolution is going to be, what games you’re interested in playing, and what frame rate you want to hit. Choosing the right PSU for your build is quite a simple decision these days. We highly recommend using a calculator to find the right wattage for your build. But do bear in mind that most overestimate on purpose for your safety and protection. They also typically operate under the notion that all components will be drawing the maximum amount of energy from the wall at 100 percent load. With surprisingly little fanfare, Microsoft has for the first time endorsed a range of third-party laptops based on a mixture of AMD, Intel, and ARM processors.
