What is the most challenging quilt you have ever attempted? Do you enjoy a challenge, or shy away from it? These are the questions that we contemplated for this issue. For me, it’s a little of both. I was really curious to learn what other quilters think, so I asked our staff about the most challenging project they have ever attempted in McQ & A. Can you relate to their successes and failures? Curved seams are easiest when you pin and prepare before stitching the seam. A stiletto is helpful for keeping the raw edges aligned as you sew. Fold both concave and convex patches in half, intersecting the curve, and lightly finger press to mark the center on each patch. Align center folds, with concave patch on top, and pin. Align raw edges at both ends of seam and pin. Manipulate fabric to align raw edges and pin at approximately 1" intervals until all raw edges are aligned and pinned in place. Stitch slowly, removing pins as the presser foot reaches them. To make seams extra secure, backstitch at beginning and end of seams. Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½" smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances. I love making quilts because there are so many ways to be creative! From choosing the colors and fabrics, the design of the pieced top, and the motifs of the quilting stitches, there is ample opportunity for making something special and unique. The finishing step of quilting can often seem the most daunting step of the process, especially if we want to do something unique for our quilt top. More than five years ago I decided to make a double wedding ring quilt for my niece when she got married. I had no idea how much work it was to make one. At the time, I was a trial attorney and quilting was my hobby. Then suddenly quilting as my business started to take off and I no longer had time to work on the wedding ring quilt. When I found a fabric collection named Adeline, and my niece has a daughter named Adeline, I thought maybe I could make some amends by making her the quilt and naming it after her daughter. Center and pin border strips to sides, top, and bottom of quilt. Strips will extend beyond quilt top. Starting and stopping ¼" from quilt corners and backstitching to secure, sew strips to quilt top. Press seam allowances toward quilt center. Fold quilt on diagonal, right sides together. Align border strip raw edges and border seams at the ¼" backstitched point; pin together. She enlarged the pattern to be queen-sized, finishing at 96” x 96”. Crystal Dennis of Maricopa, Arizona revised Lotus (McCall’s Quilting March/April 2019) to a nine block setting to make a baby quilt for her friend Jane’s grandchild. Crystal also modified the assembly of the blocks by machine appliquéing the blocks with green backgrounds, cutting them into quarters, mixing the quarters and reassembling the blocks into the quilt top. I started thinking about this quilt when we were working on an issue of Quilty that was to have a steampunk theme. I didn’t know a lot about steampunk so I surfed the Internet looking at images of paintings, garments, and all sorts of art that featured steampunk. There were so many pictures that included clocks, gears, and mechanical parts. I still felt a little out of my element so I asked my son Elijah, who is an artist, to help me with a design for my quilt. They asked me to use their bedroom lamps as an inspiration. The lamps are teal and beige and have a rock-like appearance. I found Surrounded by Love in the July/August 2012 issue of McCall’s Quilting and it is perfect. The Burgoyne Surrounded block mimics the geometric shape of Chase and Sherrie’s beautiful lamps.
