Fall is my favorite season. The crisp air, the leaves changing colors, I enjoy the way the air smells and I love Halloween. I certainly love the quilts! There is something so cozy about preparing for winter by making quilts. This issue has many cuddly quilts that you will want to make immediately. Two of my favorites utilize specialty fabrics that I personally cannot resist. Harvest Festival by Tailormade By Design is a quilt that has a lot of wow but is easy to make. It’s getting to be that time of year, when we start thinking about hunkering down under our cozy, comforting quilts, and I for one start to think longingly about flannel, Minky, and wool. These fabrics offer great texture and warmth for the season, but they may need a few modifications to your quilting style to make them look their best. These fabrics are so cuddly because they have a delicious fuzzy nap. The very thing that makes them perfect for cool weather can cause some problems while quilting. The nap itself can create greater friction with the thread. In order to avoid breaking thread, lengthen your stitch length a bit, between 10 and 12 stitches per inch. Fewer stitches per inch means fewer times that the thread has to punch…

There’s something mystical about Stonehenge. For millennia, that mystical quality has inspired any who visit the towering stones set so incongruously in Salisbury Plain in England. In Spring 2008, it inspired Linda Ludovico to design a fabric collection. The massive stones had the perfect textural variety to create fascinating, naturalistic-looking repeats within the fabric. My wonderful granddaughters have a nine hour drive when they come to see me so I wanted to create something that they could do in the car that wasn’t electronic. I used the first line of fabrics that I designed for Henry Glass called, “Ain’t Life a Hoot.” The X’s & O’s are owls stitched with some of my hand-dyed wools which match the rainy day design in the fabric collection. Easy to use, neat and tidy, plus this pillow has multiple purposes—which I LOVE to design.
