It seems like it was just yesterday we were toasting to 2019, and now 2020 is almost here. Can you believe how this year flew by? My goal for 2019 was to get more quilts finished, and I am pleased to say I did get more projects done. By the time you are reading this, I am guaranteed to be frantically finishing up several projects to place under the tree. For this issue, we wanted big, cozy quilts—and boy, did our designers come through! Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½" smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances. I thought this would make the perfect quilt for our soon-to-be-purchased queen-size bed. The design is heat-transferred to a muslin foundation. Triangles feature heavily in most of the quilts we make. Despite its apparent simplicity, this shape can be tricky. Here are some tips for handling triangles! Truly Aligned Centering a triangle to a square unit can be tricky business, as the base of the triangle is often longer than the edge to which you are attaching it. Folding or notching the units to mark the half-way point, and then matching those marks, is one way to align a triangle to another patch. Another approach to alignment is sometimes called “engineered corners.” Rather than allowing the tips to extend, the tips are squared off at a specific angle to assist with joining.
