Whether it’s used to navigate which direction to travel, discover hidden secrets about ourselves and the universe, or dazzle the eyes on a clear, starry night, the sky—and the night sky in particular—continues to instruct, inspire, and integrate us into the wider universe. Even after millennia, the allure is still as strong and mysterious as ever. As quilters, we’re constantly drawing inspiration from everything around us; stars and suns especially have a wide and varied representation in quilt designs—and in this issue, we’re celebrating that influence. When I made the quilt Up, Up, and Away—a pattern previously published in the Quick Quilts August/September 2019 issue, I took the extra step of making Triangle-Squares from the leftover stitch-and-flip corners. I just stitched another seam ½" away from the first seam, cut between seams, and I had the required stitch-and-flip corner plus a bonus Triangle-Square! It’s something I do as a matter of course when stitch-and-flip corners are more than 3½" or so—since the resulting Triangle-Squares are big enough to make something interesting—whatever it may be. I didn’t have a plan for them but it felt wasteful to just toss the leftover corners, especially when there are so many stitchand-flip corners required for the original pattern!
