The SEEMING collapse of the proposed asinine European Super League (ESL) before it even started may have done the Beautiful Game that is football a huge favour. With money pouring into rugby and cricket, its implications are much wider.
I say “seeming” because if Messrs Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid and Joan Laporta, his Barcelona counterpart, have their way, ESL is merely on “standby” and they will pursue it “to ensure the financial health of the game”. What poppycock! Perez and Laporta are the unacceptable faces of football capitalism, which in recent decades have served the greed of club owners, shareholders, “elite” footballers, broadcasters, sponsors and agents.
This resulted in ever-increasing and unsustainable football inflation in the transfer market, elite player wages, shareholder dividends, ticket…
