TODAY is Pickles Day at Leeds Castle in Kent, England, where a whooper swan named Pickles will celebrate his 30th birthday with swan-friendly cake and share it with the other birds. Pickles is believed to be the oldest swan in Britain, according to Sky News. His exact birthday is not known but it is known that he hatched early in June 1991. Staff of the castle’s falconry and wildlife team decided long ago to name June 3 as Pickles Day, and they’ve celebrated the occasion every year since. But his 30th is considered special. This is if business organisation Sakeliga is successful with a new litigation strategy to try to save local economies from municipal implosion. In papers served on two municipalities in the North West, as well as the Ministry of Finance and others, Sakeliga is asking the court for far-reaching interventions that have never been applied at municipal level. The North Coast municipality confirmed yesterday that it had issued a public notice about the issue as it had noticed a trend of illegal burials taking place. “The public notice serves to notify the community that burials are not allowed in areas that have not been designated and approved by the municipality as legitimate cemeteries,” reads the notice. A lower court earlier sentenced Aardiel Essop to 10 years’ imprisonment after he was convicted on 45 charges of contravening the Films and Publications Act, as well as kidnapping. Unhappy with the fact that the magistrate compared his case to another in which a man was sentenced to 10 years for 144 pornographic transgressions, Essop appealed to the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria. It said it was concerned that, just like in the cases of gender-based violence, incidents of bullying in schools and society got inconsistent public and media attention or coverage. “It is only when lives are lost where both the media and the public will do awareness on the matters,” said Mpho Kgabi, general-secretary of the association. “As an organisation, we condemn all forms of bullying, discrimination and abuse.” Kgabi said by its nature, bullying was an infringement on a person’s right to dignity, freedom and security, privacy and equality. “We call for all schools to address bullying by ensuring that anti-bullying strategies are developed and audited.” Kgabi said teachers and parents were…

Following the announcement of the registration for vaccination of citizens over 60, my wife (75 years old) and I (87) registered online on April 16. Up till Monday , there was no confirmation of date and venue for the vaccine programme. We phoned the Covid-19 hotline number 080 002 9999. The response was to wait until we got confirmation. Our registration on April 16 was acknowledged as it had been received. Subsequently the vaccination programme was carried out in Tongaat at the Tongaat Community Health Centre, Gokhale Hall/ Vishwaroop and the sports centre. Many of our friends and neighbours had gone to these venues and were vaccinated as long as they were over 60. No confirmation was required. A cargo ship carrying tons of chemicals sank off Sri Lanka’s west coast, its navy said yesterday, and tons of plastic pellets have fouled the country’s rich fishing waters in one of its worst marine disasters. The government yesterday suspended fishing along an 80km stretch of the island’s coastline, affecting 5 600 fishing boats, and hundreds of soldiers have been deployed to clean affected beaches. Members of the vast trans-Pacific trade deal agreed yesterday to start the process for Britain to join the pact as the country pursues its post-Brexit commerce strategy. Britain applied in February to join the 11-nation deal, signed in 2018 by countries including Japan, Canada, Mexico, Vietnam and Australia. RETAILER Shoprite Holdings said yesterday that it had sold its Nigerian operations, Retail Supermarkets Nigeria Limited (RSNL), to local firm Ketron Investment, a subsidiary of property firm Persianas Investment. The amount of the deal was not disclosed. It includes both a franchise agreement, which secures RSNL the right to continue to use the Shoprite brand and an administration and services agreement, which provides RSNL with administration and technical support from the Shoprite Group for an initial period of five years. FISHING company Oceana Group grew its profits despite Covid-19 disruption for the six months ended March 31, 2021, thanks to strong demand for its products. Profit before tax increased 5 percent to R489 million, while earnings per share rose 13 percent to 284 cents and headline earnings per share were up 4 percent to 260.5c in the reported period. Stats SA published its latest quarterly labour force survey on Tuesday for the first quarter of this year, which showed the number of employed people remained almost unchanged at 15 million, a slight decrease of 28 000. The number of unemployed people increased by 8 000 to 7.2 million compared to the last three months of last year, while the number of discouraged work-seekers increased by 201 000. The official unemployment rate among youth (15-34 years) was 46.3% in this year’s first quarter. The rate was 9.3% among university graduates. Israel’s health officials have found a probable link between Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE’s coronavirus vaccine and dozens of cases of heart inflammation in young men following the second dose of the vaccine, the Health Ministry said this week. The vaccine has been administered to more than 5 million people in the country, and the number of Covid-19 cases has plummeted. The Health Ministry said yesterday that despite the possible link, it would expand its vaccination drive to 12-16-year-olds. The US Food and Drug Administration has authorised its use for this age group. DEREK KRUMMECK uMhlanga AFTER what I went through in renewing a driver’s licence at the Verulam licensing centre, I just have to publicise the absolute nightmare experience. Verulam is trying an appointment booking system which should take one 15 minutes tops. Despite making a booking and complying with every requirement, including taking a successful eye test result, with the chaotic organisation and rudeness of staff, it still took two and a half hours. The man dealing with the bookings is the most impolite man ever. Not one Verulam staff member smiled or greeted when I greeted them. A doctor from the Eastern Cape has been sentenced in the Gqeberha Specialised Commercial Crime Court on multiple charges of Road Accident Fund (RAF) fraud amounting to R2.25 million. The provincial spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, said Dr Tony Moodley, 64, was convicted in December last year and sentenced on Tuesday. She said an investigation revealed that Moodley orchestrated RAF claims for 83 patients he reportedly attended to. Some of the claims were false. She said the patients were said to be involved in a head-on collision that took place between two buses in Walmer in Gqeberha on June 16, 2007. Gaborone: Botswana has banned imports of cloven-hoofed animals and their fresh products from South Africa after an outbreak of foot and mouth disease was detected in the country. The Botswana ministry of agriculture said it would no longer import live animals, their fresh products as well as veld grass, bedding and manure contaminated products and vehicles from South Africa to protect its lucrative cattle industry. Botswana is one of the largest beef exporters to the European Union but has often suspended sales in the past due to foot and mouth disease outbreaks from its neighbouring countries. An American subsidiary of Brazilian meat processor JBS told the US government that it has received a ransom demand in a cyberattack it believes originated in Russia, forcing some plants to cut production. JBS received the demand from “a criminal organisation likely based in Russia” following the attack that has affected its operations in Australia and North America, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said on Tuesday. The Lawn bowls league season is often the cause of sad laments and complaints from the thirsty elbow-benders about the decisions made by selection committees. There is a well known Selectors’ Prayer that is often quoted, “Blessed are they who can play the sport. Blessed are they who can still be taught.
