Heavy rains followed by landslides and flooding in Sri Lanka killed at least 14 people and has affected over 250 000 more in the past two days with warnings that adverse weather conditions would continue, officials said yesterday. South-west monsoon rains settling in the country’s western, southern and central parts resulted in heavy showers and landslides in several areas. A family of four was killed when they were buried in a landslide in Aranayaka, 90km east of Colombo. The other victims also died in landslides or were swept away by flooded rivers or streams. GERMANY-based instant grocery delivery company Flink on Friday announced a $240 million (R3.22 billion) Series A funding round lead by Prosus and other investors. Flink has more than 50 hubs in 18 cities after four months of operations, reaching more than three million custom- ers directly. At the same time, a partner- ship had been agreed with REWE Group, one of the largest supermarket chains across Germany. The RAND’S explosive run against major currencies is likely to begin to lose momentum. My analysis indicates that the rolling 12-month momentum of an equity market weighted currency index of emerging markets excluding Asia (based on the MSCI Emerging Markets ex Asia Index) against the US dollar is highly correlated to the momentum of the S&P Goldman Sachs Commodity Index (S&P GSCI). The S&P GSCI cover physical commodities spanning five sectors: energy, industrial metals, precious metals, agriculture, and livestock, weighted in relation to their global production levels. In a communiqué issued by the institution, the university said that there were people who were encouraging students to vacate university-approved leased student accommodation and relocate to other establishments that were not formally approved and leased by the university. Eskom’s inability to maintain infrastructure and cater for a growing population means that load shedding is inevitable and while many plans have been offered up, there is not one that offers confidence that a regular and uninterrupted supply of power will be a reality. Dealing with Eskom’s unaffordable and unmanageable debt levels is a key priority for the power utility and the Department of Public Enterprises. THE death toll from the worst militant attack in Burkina Faso in recent years has risen to 132, the government said at the weekend, after armed assailants laid siege overnight to a village in the jihadist-plagued north-east. The attackers struck during the night on Friday, killing residents of the village of Solhan in Yagha province, bordering Niger. Baghdad: The Iraqi Army said two drones were shot down yesterday over a military base hosting US-led international forces fighting the Islamic State (IS) terror group. The air defence system at the Ain al-Assad base, located in western Iraq, intercepted and shot down the two drones, the Iraqi military-linked Security Media Cell said. Police in north-west Nigeria’s Kebbi state told AFP yesterday that the death toll from an attack by a gang of cattle thieves on seven villages Thursday had risen to 88.
