Data from the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) yesterday showed that private sector credit fell 0.42 percent year-on-year in May, following a deep decline of 1.76 percent in April. This decline was better than market expectations of 0.9 percent. SARB said the ease was primarily due to corporate credit, which contracted 5 percent year-on-year in May following a sharp 6.7 percent slump in April. This is according to Premier Sihle Zikalala, as he said the province had recorded a 37% increase in cases in the past 14 days, amounting to 2 145 cases. On Tuesday, the province registered 947 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of reported cases to 353 348. Zikalala said the increase in the number of new cases had occurred in 10 of the 11 districts across the province, except for the Harry Gwala District. “We are observing that five districts are in resurgence, eThekwini, Uthukela, Umgungundlovu, Amajuba and Umzinyathi. A US government report on UFOs said analysts lack sufficient data to determine the nature of mysterious flying objects observed by US military pilots including whether they are advanced earthly technologies, atmospherics or of an extraterrestrial origin. The report, released to Congress and the public, encompasses 144 observations – mostly from US Navy personnel – of what the government officially calls “unidentified aerial phenomenon”, or UAP, dating back to 2004. Armed robbers shot and killed a security guard in oThongathi on Tuesday night. The 40-year-old guard and his colleague were on duty guarding a reservoir when they came under attack. Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said it is alleged that at 8.45pm, two security guards were on duty at Emona, oThongathi when they were attacked by three armed men. “One of the suspects fired a shot at the 40-year-old security guard. YOUTH month has come and gone. It is thus compelling to reflect on the challenges facing South Africa’s youth – top of which is unemployment. According to Statistics South Africa’s (StatsSA) Quarterly Labour Force for the first quarter of 2021, South Africa’s unemployment rate stood at 32.6 percent. This rate was 46.3 percent among young people aged 15 to 34 years, implying that almost one in every two young people in the labour force did not have a job in the first quarter of 2021. About a quarter, 24.4 percent, of the youth have jobs, and 45.3 percent participate in the labour market. During a council meeting on Tuesday, the municipality put forward a proposal to amend its by-laws on the number of meetings the municipality has to hold each year. The council currently has to hold 11 full council meetings, and it is looking to reduce this to a minimum of four meetings each year. THE 32 cents/litre price increase in illuminating paraffin set to kick in this month has been described as an attack on the poor and vulnerable. The slump in tourism caused by Covid-19 will cost the global economy more than $4 trillion for 2020 and 2021, much worse than anticipated, as an uneven vaccination roll-out crushes developing countries that are highly dependent on international visitors. I MUST concede that I was rather apprehensive prior to the Constitutional Court’s decision on Jacob Zuma’s contempt trial sentencing. That Zuma was found guilty of contempt, in defiance of an order by the highest court, one can only be impressed with the sentencing that now relegates him to a cell for 15 months. My only disappointment was that there was a dissenting judgment in the form of a minority judgment by two justices which in essence was a consensus ad idem save the punitive aspect that was imposed. IN AMERICA, restaurant patrons take it very seriously when the grub does not come up to scratch. The Huffington Post lists two instances of dissatisfied customers threatening to blow the place up. One was in Iowa where a fellow ordered Chicken McNuggets from McDonald’s and was enraged when he got home to find they hadn’t included the sauce, without which Chicken McNuggets is just not Chicken McNuggets.
