I did so today and I was shocked at the difference in riding quality and general road condition between the N3 national road managed by Sanral, and the Western Freeway managed by the municipality. In an instant, the smooth ride on the N3 is rudely interrupted by the atrocious ride on the Western Freeway shortly after passing through the “4-level” interchange travelling eastwards. This section of road has numerous places where the riding course is peeling off, there are small potholes, and the road markings are barely visible. The asylum seekers, who fled Somalia, sought an order reviewing and setting aside decisions of the Refugee Appeal Board (RAB) after they were refused refugee status. As ordered by the SCA, the applicants’ appeals were referred to the RAB for fresh hearings to commence no later than October 4, with decisions to be made by November 5 this year. The appeal dealt with the legality and fairness of the process adopted by the RAB, including whether it complied with its duty to assist asylum seekers to get evidence and information for decisions it had to take. The Durban metro police have welcomed the 20-year jail term handed to a former constable who shot dead his ex-girlfriend using his service pistol. Constable Ndumiso Simiso Khumalo, 31, was sentenced to 20 years by the Pietermaritzburg High Court. He was found guilty of shooting his ex, Zinhle Muthwa, in January last year with his service pistol. Metro police spokesperson Parboo Sewpersad said they welcomed the sentence and would not tolerate any form of gender-based violence, saying that officers were supposed to uphold the law, not break it. The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) issued a public warning yesterday that a growing number of pain medications bought on the black market are laced with the synthetic opioid fentanylor and the stimulant methamphetamine, driving overdose deaths to record levels. DEA administrator Anne Milgram said: “We are in the midst of an overdose crisis, and counterfeit pills are driving much of it.” The US saw a record number of drug overdose deaths last year – more than 93 000, which marked an increase of almost 30% from 2019. As of September 23, 8.1 million cases had been reported in the different member states, accounting for 3.6% of the Covid-19 cases reported globally, the Africa CDC said. “The continent is still going through a severe third wave – 78% of our member states are currently going through the third wave. PREGNANT women hospitalised for Covid-19 face higher risk of death than infected women admitted for other illnesses. This is according to a new study published in the International Journal of Gynaecology & Obstetrics, which also found that maternal tuberculosis, but not HIV co-infection or other comorbidities, was associated with admission for Covid-19. The study’s co-principal investigator and head of the Global Surgery Division at UCT, Associate Professor Salome Maswime, said the national observational study which assessed the symptoms and associations between Covid-19 in pregnancy and maternal and neonatal outcomes showed around 7.5% of all admitted women required invasive ventilation, three- quarters of whom were admitted specifically for Covid-19 management. It is time for President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene in the Zulu royal family succession dispute, or risk witnessing a messy battle that will tarnish the image of traditional leadership. Since the death of King Goodwill Zwelithini in March this year, the royal family has been embroiled in an unfortunate battle over who should succeed the late king. This was according to South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) board chairperson David Nicholls, who yesterday in a statement welcomed Cabinet’s approval of the MPR reactor. There are 12 nuclear research reactors in Africa. The Safari-1 reactor near Pretoria, a 20MW light water-cooled research reactor, went critical on March 18, 1965. Nicholls said some 5 000 direct and 26 000 indirect jobs would be created during construction of the MPR. The tentative date of start of construction is 2025. The employment initiative, which will close on October 3, seeks to employ 287 000 youth in the sector. It is part of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) included in the Presidential Employment Stimulus (PES) to mitigate the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Of the 287 000, about 192 000 will be employed as Education Assistants and 95 000 as general school assistants. The BEEI is looking for applicants aged 18-35. SYDNEY: The Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) announced the building of a new national park in Western Sydney that will become home to a number of locally extinct Australian wildlife species.
