Kathmandu: A Nepali guide died after summiting the world’s fifth-highest mountain, officials in the Himalayan Republic said yesterday, in the first fatality of the spring climbing season. FEARFUL eThekwini Municipality workers have compared working in the City’s water unit as the equivalent of “working in a war zone”, following yet another murder of a city employee this week. The backlog of visa applications has increased by 20 000 in a space of about five months as at the end of January. Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said the visa backlogs reached 92 157 at the end of January. This was up from 74 309 recorded in August 2023. A man from Beaufort West in the Western Cape has been sentenced for the murder of his girlfriend in the Beaufort West Regional Court. Ricardo Jacobs, 39, stabbed his 26-year-old girlfriend, Samantha May, 42 times on July 6, 2019, in their home on Safraan Avenue. This was in front of her son, who was 6 at the time. After the murder, Jacobs fled the scene but was arrested the next day. The court heard he told police that two Cape Town gang members killed his girlfriend and that they wanted to kill him too. A man drowned in a freak accident on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast on Wednesday afternoon. Emergency workers said the man had been working in a trench in the Salt Rock area when the water pipe burst. The incident took place around 5pm. According to Dylan Meyrick from private emergency services provider, IPSS Medical Rescue, the contractor was carrying out repairs when he drowned. “Reports from the scene indicate that the man was busy working in a trench when a water pipe burst.
