Lake Superior runs deep and cold, so salmon start showing up in the warmer waters in the southern part of the lake before more are seen at northern latitudes. The twin ports of Duluth, Minn., and Superior, Wisc., are best known for lake trout, but anglers also target salmon. A record hatch of lake herring has Superior running on a 40-year high for baitfish, which ultimately led to a new Minnesota state-record coho salmon last September. Bigger cohos are expected to be landed in 2024. Heading east on Superior’s shore, Saxon Harbor, Wisc., and Copper Harbor, Mich., are excellent fishing destinations, too.
