I recently delved into the beautiful pages of iconic designer Rose Tarlow’s new book, Three Houses. Reading her prose and looking at the photographs (many of which were taken by Miguel Flores-Vianna, a longtime MILIEU contributing photographer) brought me back to earlier days in my design career when, even then, I loved wonderful “brown” antiques, especially when mixed with different textures and periods. Brown antiques is an endearing term that refers to a certain type of classic vintage furniture and accessory with traditional forms. For years, during my full-time work as an interior designer, I used Rose’s first book, The Private House (published in 2001), as a constant source of inspiration. Across the gallery sits a faceless couple. Flattened to their most idiomatic outlines, they converse in shallow planes of imaginative color—Crimson Coral, Stuart Gold, Cornflower Blue. Although John Saladino has designed innumerable houses, inside and out, planned gardens, and created furniture and accessories that have become iconic elements, he often refers to his own homes to illustrate the concepts that define him. From the famous Robin Hill estate in Norfolk, Connecticut, and the magical Villa di Lemma in Montecito, California (both previously owned by Saladino), to his current Santa Barbara house, the designer talks about how he moves through the spaces and how they frame vistas. Even though Rose Tarlow, the noted furniture and interior designer, calls this book Three Houses (Vendome), it’s really about four houses. It seems her East Coast girlhood home, Windrift, which burned down in 1966, remains the idyllic dwelling through which she wanders constantly in her imagination. These decades later, as an accomplished and multi-talented woman, Tarlow writes, “I can see the seashells on my mantel, the starched white organdy-clad vanity that I had forgotten about. The walls, because of the dampness of the ocean, would be repainted every few years. LAURELS FOR LAURA For the interior design industry, the equivalent of an Oscar at the Academy Awards is likely the honor of being named Designer of the Year at the annual Maison&Object fair held during Paris Design Week. In 2019, young Paris-based Laura Gonzalez received the coveted designation; since that time, her design work and ever-growing furniture accessories collection have continued to flourish. When I entered a greenhouse for the first time as a child, the warmth and humidity of its tropical climate fogged my eyeglasses. WHENEVER Benoît Rauzy and his partner, Anthony Watson, feel the urge to escape the whirl of their lives in Paris, they retreat to the hush of their country home in Brittany. The nineteenth-century stone farmhouse, which belonged to Rauzy’s parents when he was a child growing up in the 1960s and ‘70s, not only brims with charm and fond memories, but also serves as a working extension of the furniture-making business the couple developed at their other getaway property (located in the south of France).
