CENTENARIAN MARINE AWARDED GOLD MEDAL FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — 101-year-old Cpl. George Johnson, one of the first Black Marines, was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal Feb. 8. Johnson was a military policeman during the World War II era and served for a short time in the Pacific immediately after the war. Johnson was honored at a gathering at the Fort Lauderdale African-American Research Library and Cultural Center. Johnson trained at Montford Point, learning military policing and attaining the rank of corporal. He served in the Pacific following the end of World War II, from Nov. 2, 1945, to March 28, 1946, and was honorably discharged about two months later. Patch and insignia collectors will soon have something different to display as the United States Space Force, the sixth and newest branch of the United States military, has been working with the Institute of Heraldry at Fort Belvoir, Virginia to design and create insignia for seals, badges, chevrons, and other uniform accessories to differentiate the branch from the rest of the force.
