Pearl Harbor hero to be reburied in Arlington ARLINGTON, Va. — Seventy-six years after his valiant service during the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Seaman 1st Class James Richard Ward of Ohio will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony was scheduled for Dec. 21and will remember Ward, who was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. According to a story at www.bigislandnow.com, the 20-year-old Ward originally was interred as an Unknown at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii until his remains were identified in 2021 using new technology. Little Runaway Q: I want to thank you for your great articles in Military Vehicle (Trader) Magazine. Your articles are the first thing that I read when I receive a new publication. I have been in the HMV Hobby for the last 43 years and have owned several HMVs. In all that time I have never heard anyone warn owners about a “run away” problem that can happen in the 6.2 Liter diesel engines used in the CUCVs and HumVees. On a beautiful fall day on Oct. 22, the North Coast Military Collectors held their 17th bi-annual military show at the MAPS Air Museum in North Canton, Ohio. Eager military collectors were not disappointed by more than 275 tables of outstanding insignia, medals, weapons, uniforms, and ephemera, representing all eras of military collecting and a myriad of countries. The event gave visitors an opportunity to meet other collectors, artists, local veterans, and experts in a wide area of military fields. The show takes place in a hangar displaying historical aircraft an gives attendees an opportunity to visit the Ohio Military Museum Room, featuring 13 Medal of Honor displays. There are plenty of collectors who will tell you they have a revolving collection, often selling items at a not-so-small profit to support their hobby. And there are likely just as many who will vow “never” to sell anything, as it would be a sacrilege to even consider parting with anything. I fall under the latter group a lot more than the former. On December 2, 1943, the civilian residents of the British seaside town of Bude on the north coast of Cornwall, in the southwest of England, turned out to greet the latest in a long line of visitors to come to their town. Bude had been a popular holiday destination for many years, welcoming tourists who came to enjoy the sandy bay, clear waters and hospitality of the many hotels and guest houses. Since each nation has its own system of awards, it is impossible to collect the overwhelming amount of orders, decorations and medals over the course of thousands of years of human history. One tiny and fascinating area to possibly explore are the stars awarded by national and military entities. For the purpose of this article a “star” will be defined as a medal, decoration or order not attached to a ribbon, sash, collar or bar and usually secured by means of a pin or screw. Stars are often associated with the highest class of an order and military awards, reserved for the most conspicuous acts of bravery or achievement.
